Combination of simply enjoying and pursuit of knowledge. In the past year I've had a lot of spare time and listening to and learning about music and artists turned out to be what I focused my energy on. I don't regret it at all and now I can't imagine not being into music!

All that's been said before, plus the fact that I'm slowly realizing how much there is to listen to and how I'm at the age where I actually have a bit of time to explore and discover great new stuff. I've only been a music addict for about 2-3 years, so I still haven't gotten over the shock of discovering a wonderful world of listening experiences beyond what's popular/ already recognized by many, and it's an addictive feeling.

Music is the only thing (besides drugs maybe, but I haven't tried those) that moderates my moods. It keeps me from turning into a psycho bitch when I feel like killing the people I live with. It helps pick me up when I'm feeling depressed. It gets me even more excited when I'm already happy. Nothing, not talking to a good friend, not writing, not even alcohol has proven to have the same affect.

I want to make the most of the technology that allows me to have so much right at the tips of my fingers. Never in the history of our species has it been easier to share culture via the internet and the amount that I've learned about various parts of the world through the music (be it the lyrics, background of the band, etc.) As far as new music... well partly it's be current. There always should be an appreciation of what came before, but sometimes I feel that appreciation inadvertently shifts into worshiping while everything new slips you by and suddenly you're handicapped by your particular tastes. I like to try and have my fingers in as many pop culture notions as to be able to contribute to conversations.

So I guess it's a mix of wishing to keep up to date, a desire to maximize the potential of the internet, and a seeping curiosity of how people are looking at the world we live in today and applying it to music.

Basically all of the above.

It's the only thing that can calm me down and level me out. I find so much solace from music that I don't think I could get anywhere else. I'm going to go with the whole "Music is my Religion"...

There's a full spectrum out there and I probably haven't even witnessed a fraction of it, It's just a voyage of discovery.

I'm going with this one. I'm extremely obsessive compulsive, and sometimes feel the need to listen to as many artists as I ever hear about, not just in the hope of finding another one that really appeals to me and makes experiences more enjoyable, but also for the sake of actually hearing them.
I'm not trying to impress anyone, if I was then that wouldn't be obsessive compulsive.

You could probably divine from this that I don't really enjoy listening to new music for the sake of art. That might have some truth in it, since a lot of the music I really enjoy comes from some of the predictable old timers, Led Zep, Eric Clapton etc, but I do occasionally find something from the past that is fading into obscurity, like Blind Beck or Lemon Jefferson, or a newer artist that is really igniting a new spark, like Wilco.

Overall, it's perhaps a ridiculous waste of time for something I get such little pleasure out of, but I think that my psychology makes that unavoidable.

The brain is still a muscle of sorts and it needs to exercise so the more you try to experience the more it will benefit you.

I genuinely hope to still be listening to new music when I'm in my 70's. The minute you stop progressing is the minute you stagnate.

All this.

Plus, there is so much out there to appreciate. I've listened to so much and my opinion on certain genres and bands has changed so much that I feel I owe it to all forms of music to give them a fair shot. Once I realized I could appreciate basically anything if I approach it in the right way I realized I really have a **** load to explore.

Listening to new music or just music in general is a hobby of mine. Just like some people like watching t.v. or playing video games. I think music is definatley meant to be appreciated and it seems that I just anticipate what the future brings. With so many genres and ones being created what's not to look forward to for someone who enjoys music?
