Regarding MegaUpload:
Guys, the childish scare-mongering is annoying. Believe it or not (which I know is not easy to accept these days with NDA, PIPA, and SOPA on the horizon), the government is not out to get you. Regardless of which country Megaupload is based in, and regardless of which country those arrested are citizens of, they either committed or facilitated theft of intellectual property that belonged to copyright holders in the United States. Furthermore, the US received permission from NZ to make the arrests-- they aren't "policing the world". Most countries have an agreement with the US saying they will honor US copyrights, and they give the US jurisdiction in US copyright infringements. And lastly, one of Megaupload's servers is based in Virginia, which uncoincidentally is where the indictment originated. |

How is that better? I get that what the government did can be justified (I'm sure they deliberated for hours how to bend the probe to their will, so that they could make the arrests without violating laws).
What I don't get is the moral high ground position you seem to have taken, especially as a member of music forum, who like the rest of us most likely, has a disposable income that doesn't meet their demand for music. My position is that they will NEVER completely abolish piracy of music. This changes nothing about how I will spend my money where I spend my money, it just makes it a bit more inconvenient to download music and leaves me with a disagreeable opinion on all those entertainment companies. Of course, I can only speak for myself. |

I can't remember. But the Huffington Post article about it says they were "arrested Thursday in New Zealand at the request of U.S. officials", which to me certainly seems to imply that they were arrested by NZ authorities.

Also, Tuna, not sure what "moral highground" you're talking about. I never said I condoned the actions of the US government, I was simply pointing out that their actions were completely in line with established international copyright laws, and that they weren't going rogue and eating up the free world as we know it (as some responses in this thread seem to indicate). |

The arrest was carried out by the Organised & Financial Crime Agency New Zealand and police following a "mutual legal assistance request from the US to arrest individuals for the purpose of extradition". |

My problem is why are the FBI even wasting their time with this? Don't they have a mass murderer somewhere to catch or something? Seems to be evident now more than ever that Hollywood's got it's hand in the government's pocket. |
