But would a video be a classic if the music wasn't memorable in some way as well?

Yes. See below. Not a particularly good song but I've always thought the video was pretty good. I love the video's ability to turn a very bland pop song into something absurd and somewhat creepy.

They are still important, but not nearly enough as they used to be. I think you can chalk this one up to the internet making music so readily available. It used to be that you could only hear music on MTV and radio, so naturally you would see a lot more music videos.

However, there are some classics that never grow old, such as Heart Shaped Box by Nirvana and Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden. Lights by Interpol is one of my modern favourites.

in the 80s and 90s they made or broke bands and it was a true art form (and a ton of money was spent)

i think seeing the artist is still important but not sure videos even matter to the release of music nowadays...

Of course they matter. If trashy pop artists want me to deign to listen to their songs, they pretty much have to have a whole string of preferably scantily clad hot women to distract me from the music.

In all seriousness though, given the success of YouTube nowadays for the promotion of artists, I think videos are still pretty important. A catchy, well executed, original video is always great to watch, and if it fits with the music and amplifies your memory of it, so much the better.

I guess that, for people who tend to be more visual, maybe videos make them have a kind of connection between the sounds they're hearing and visual patterns that are naturally pleasing to them, making the listening experience more enjoyable, possibly.

I personally don't really care about videos, seeing as a lot of the music I like has either terrible videos or none at all.

i don't even feel the need to link any sort of images to the music I hear now

i'll create those in my head

as opposed to, say, when music videos were only starting to burgeon, and i most likely watch than listen to them

I depends on the artist. Music can be expressed visually as well - remember it's an art form that can be applied to different mediums - even paintings, mosaics and variations of the music itself through inspiration.

Some music videos can really make you think. Others you wish you could have your few minutes of life back.

Music video is just one form of promoting an artist or band in question. I still watch them regularly and prefer visual material. The social media is a huge way of promoting new material.
Music had to embrace the internet. The Gorillaz use Facebook, Twitter and You Tube heavily to promote themselves.

I think most bands use Youtube as a promotion vehicle these days!

i can actually enhance a song for me if done well...and similarly, ruin it for me if not
