Hmm.. ok. So does the fact that they changed it make it better than the original? Or does it just prevent it from taking away from the cover? I agree that changing a song is necessary for a cover (I believe I said so in my original post) but it's more of a "lack of detriment" than an advantage to the song, if that make sense. Janis Joplin's version is also very different from the original (as indeed are most of the versions in this thread, to different extents). Does the extent to which the cover varies from the original make a difference to you? What do you think about the other versions in the thread?
What about the fact that the band is Dutch? Does that make a difference to you? If you love the guy's voice, do you disagree with what I said about the high-pitched wails? Do they add to the song for you, or would you, like me, prefer if he hadn't done them?

Nah, usually I don't like Dutch bands. There's not much good music coming from the Netherlands. I'm not at all nationalistic .
To be honest, I think the biggest problem was the intention I had while posting my version of Summertime. All I wanted to do is share the most beautiful version I know. Not defend it against other versions. I didn't know this was a competition. I just wanted to share it, really

My apologies if I was making it seem like a competition, I was simply curious as to your reasonings behind it being your favourite. After all, it says in the opening post:
"So, what's your favourite rendition? Why does this particular version reverbrate with you more so than any other?" What makes a thread interesting is getting people's opinions, not just on their own posts, but on the contributions of others. If we all just posted one video and said "I like this one", the thread would be dead within two days, noone would really be the wiser and apart from one or two people maybe finding a new favourite version of the song, it was pretty pointless. But if we all took the time to explain why we like it, or what makes that version particularly special for us, you not only learn something about the piece, you learn something about the user, and it can lead to other, related discussions about what people like and dislike, or don't understand. Can you see where I'm coming from? One leads to a boring forum, the other leads to an interesting forum, where people can learn about music, what other people like in music, and about the people themselves. All I'm asking for is a little more effort put into explaining what people like or dislike about different songs, I don't really think that's much to ask...

I can definitely see what you're coming from and in most cases I don't mind explaining. But I really haven't got a clue why I like this version best. Still felt like posting it though. I probably should have added that this version somehow works for me, but that I don't know how. Ah well. I hope someone enjoys listening to it anyhow

Allright, I like Brainbox's version of Summertime because it's definitely something else, I like the fact that they stuck to their own style without ruining the feeling of the song and I generally like the voice of the singer.

Joplin's is, of course, great. I'm sure a lot of people think she wrote the thing. Incredibly emotional.
This sounds absolutely terrible to me. Worst version I've heard for sure. Eh, theirs is kinda boring though Quote:
I have to give my vote to Billie Holiday though. Her opiate ridden psychic pain made everything she sang beautiful and I love her.

Honestly this would probably be my vote too, if it counts as a version of it. It's not great or anything but not bad, I like the vibes/flute combination. "Summertime" is just not a song that's ever really done it for me, and despite loving a lot of jazz generally speaking, all the jazz versions of it that I'm familiar with (Billie Holliday, Nina Simone, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker) are pretty dull to my ears. I had never heard the Janis Joplin version until reading this thread but that didn't really do it for me either.
