Do I have a bad taste in music?

I often wonder this to myself. I like CD's from bands/artists that most people despise. I like Metallica's "St. Anger", I like Megadeth's "Risk", hell, I like Limp Bizkit. Name me a band/CD, and I'll most likely like it. I like everything by almost anybody. I do not see the lines between genres like most do, I could go from Cannibal Corpse to Katy Perry to Nickelback. Do I have a bad taste in music, or am I more "musically-inclined" than most?

Janszoon 11-17-2011 05:13 AM

Well, taste is subjective. If you stick around here, and I hope you do, you'll probably end up broadening your tastes quite a bit. You might even look back at what you once thought of as "liking everything" as being a fairly narrow range of music.

Kip1985 11-17-2011 05:25 AM

The only style of music I don't like too much is Country, but even then, I love Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Conway Twitty, David Allan Coe, etc. Other than Country, I'm not very fond of bands like Queen of The Stone Age, Weezer, The White Stripes, and The Tragically Hip. Any band that's not Country, I will most likely listen to.

Yes, You do have bad taste in music. But, there's no point in asking other people. Since it's YOUR taste in music, you don't really need an outside source telling you like I am.

Have pride, and confidence in it.

Risk was a terrible album and I`m one of the few on here that probably quite likes St Anger and I`ve got a soft spot for Limp Bizkit. I`m also a music geek and often like what people regard as the best in music to sometimes what they regard as the worst.

To really know how good the bands you like are, you really need to listen to a very broad range of music and that can takes years to really absorb it, due to the amount of albums you need to listen to. Only then can you truly put into perspective the bands that you used to like.

Paedantic Basterd 11-17-2011 08:26 AM

More importantly, do you have an open mind? That's what's matters here.

Howard the Duck 11-17-2011 08:32 AM

^^my mind is so open my brain flows out of my ears

Goofle 11-17-2011 08:40 AM

I would say that is a pretty bad choice (if they are like your favourite albums) and you will need to expand your horizons a bit to truly say "I listen to everything".

Check some of the Last FM links in people's sig's to get hints and tips, or just some of the lists people have made.

As Pedestrian said, keep an open mind, don't turn off after one track (even if it's terrible goddamnit) and always question your own judgement!

Kip1985 11-17-2011 09:07 AM

I listen to every style of metal there is (death, black, thrash, etc.), every style of rock, grunge, hip hop, pop, electronica, techno, dub, old-school country, blues, classical. I have been browsing these forums for a few hours now, and trying to listen to everything new I haven't heard of before and I'm amazed with everything I've heard so far. I like all the classics that bands/artists have released, but I also enjoy their other "sub-par" releases. With Megadeth's "Risk", I don't hear it as just another Megadeth release, I hear it as a great hard rock release. "St. Anger" may have sounded nothing like "Master of Puppets", but it sounded like an excellent hard rock album to my ears.

duga 11-17-2011 09:14 AM

Listen to the posters above...seriously, there is a lot of music out there. I guarantee you will not like some of it. A lot of it will make the stuff you are listening to now look like crap to you. You sound like you are just starting off in exploring music. Go peruse the "Albums Your Digging II" thread, or if you are looking to get into a specific genre check out the threads dedicated to those. Or check out some journal entries. I can't tell you how many great albums I've found by going through Anteater's journal.

Oh, and you and just about everyone else says "I like everything but country"...until they actually listen to it. At least you didn't throw rap in there...that's another one that gets that treatment.

Paedantic Basterd 11-17-2011 09:17 AM

Right, see, the mainstream representations of genres (Pop, rap, country) are very poor examples, and there are always artists doing creative and meaningful things in those genres that don't get a lot of popular attention.

In highschool I never would've accepted that I'd be listening to "country" as an adult, but there's so much diversity in genres like Alt-country, Americana, Gothic Country, etc. You just have to look for it, or ask the right people. ;)

Goofle 11-17-2011 09:18 AM

Listen to Calexico if you think you don't like Country music. Good band to start off with.

This.
But you may not have been helping yourself putting "Nickelback" in your introduction topic. You sure have a lot of guts to do so :D

Still my favourite band, but there's nothing country-ish in Calexico if you ask me :).
I'm not sure what to start with when it comes to country. I'm more into bluegrass myself (try trampled by turtles, by the way :D).
Maybe Nick 13's album could be nice to get used to the sound of country and rockabilly in one go :)

Kip1985 11-17-2011 06:13 PM

Why was putting Nickelback a gutsy move? I genuinely like them, so I thought I would share it. I don't care if poeple want to shoot down what I think are good bands, and I will not do the same to others. And I truly don't like country music, the only style of country I can stand is old country, that's about it. Country music bores me, and I will not state all my opinions on it.

Howard the Duck 11-17-2011 06:26 PM

just wanted to say I quite like St. Anger as well

jackhammer 11-17-2011 07:26 PM

Anyone who stands by their principles and has conviction in what they listen to is fine by me. Having an open mind is what every music fan worth their salt is judged upon and even if you like artists that are not popular with the elitists or not popular with friends and relatives etc doesn't matter.

As long as you give most genres of music a decent listen and remain open minded then your tastes will never suck. Trust me, there are far more narrow minded people on here than yourself who claim to be otherwise. Knowing obscure bands or artists is not always an immediate free pass to musical enlightenment.

RVCA 11-17-2011 08:17 PM

I say don't worry about it. When I first started posting, I thought I had terrible taste in music. Turns out, haters gonna hate and it doesn't really matter what other people think.

blankety blank 11-18-2011 02:07 AM

Try this one. Or Two.

See what you think.

DoctorSoft 11-18-2011 03:05 AM

^ That first song is fantastic, I downloaded that EP. Unfortunately I thought it was going to be an album, do they have any other releases I should check out.

Kip1985 11-18-2011 05:03 AM

I listened to them both, multiple times, and they both don't catch on to me. I don't know, it's just something about the "sound" of country music that puts me off...and the voice. Most (not all) country singers sound the same to me, unless it's a woman (Taylor Swift, Shania Twain, etc., both who I have no problems listening to). I try to put myself in the mindset that country isn't all too far out there from what else I like (Nickelback, Pride & Glory, Bon Jovi, The Eagles) but I just can't do it. I'd love to be able to listen to it, but my perception of it just won't let me, if that makes any sense.

That's okay. It's just that Nickelback is the band to make fun of when it comes to 'bad rock music'. It's not something that happens just here, it's a sort of a running gag. I'm not sure why as there's bands that are far worse, but still that's how it goes :D

i quite like them initially

but all their songs sound the same after the first few singles

s_k 11-18-2011 05:38 AM

Ghehe, well I don't say I agree with the hype.
I dislike Nickelback for the same reason I dislike Pearl Jam.
I cannot stand these macho men's voices. It's so... overdone.

ThePhanastasio 11-18-2011 05:38 AM

Based on your posts, it's sounding like you're one of the close-minded open-minded music listeners out there!

I kid, I kid.

But seriously, stick around. Recommendation threads on here are great (there's at least one in every section of musical genres on here), the journals sections have a lot of really excellent write-ups on albums, and the album reviews section is also worth a read.

Checking out the "What Are You Listening To Right Now?" threads, and the "Last Album Downloaded" thread(s) also introduces you to some good stuff.

When I came to this forum, everyone I knew said that I was the biggest music nerd they'd met. That nerd-dom has only increased 100 fold in the time that I've been here!

Keep an open mind, and test the waters with some stuff you may not have thought you liked. Who knows? You may find some gems!

Howard the Duck 11-18-2011 06:03 AM

two of the best bands I got from here are Alcest and Agalloch

but there are tons of metal bands as well that was rec'd to me that I love

Kip1985 11-18-2011 06:40 AM

I've been going through a lot of the threads here and found some great stuff so far. I already looked at the "Last Album Downloaded or Bought" thread, and already made a post about what I'm getting within the next couple of weeks. I plan on staying around here for a long time, since this is the only forum I know that talks about music almost all the time.

Goofle 11-18-2011 07:09 AM

I have just joined, and it is a great forum. I will probably end up with 10,000 posts if I get into it. Then leave for about a year for no reason.

s_k 11-18-2011 10:25 AM

Leaving this forum is harder than joining it ;)

@ Kip1985; You just posted you liked Paris Hilton's album... Haha, the main question of this topic was quite retorical, right? :D

It's good to hear you already found some great stuff. Build up some references :)

You know, when I first joined this site, it was because I had become bored with metal and I wanted to expand my tastes. For the first few months I did just that, but after a while, I went right back to metal and have been almost completely unable to tear myself away for months. And this site only encourages me to listen to more.

Paedantic Basterd 11-18-2011 10:42 AM

I think you should make a post in here, Kip, and tell us exactly what it is about Country music that you dislike, and we in our wealth of knowledge can probably give you some stepping stones into the genre that lack enough of those qualities that you can appreciate it.

http://www.musicbanter.com/general-m...onversion.html

I know I have something to offer.

Kip1985 11-18-2011 10:56 AM

 Yeah, I guess I do have a bad taste in music. Oh well, as long as I enjoy everything I like then I'll be fine. I've already found a couple bands I'm interested in hearing more from. Too bad Youtube doesn't have every song from some of these bands.

Edit: I'll attempt to portray in words what I don't like about it. Thanks.

Hahaha, that's true.
Here's something close to country:

It's not really country, but it may be a nice introduction :D

Kip1985 11-18-2011 11:28 AM

Very bluegrass-y. Not that bad though.

s_k 11-18-2011 11:34 AM

Only slightly bluegrassy, but there's an entrance :D.
Now try this:

eraser.time206 11-18-2011 02:23 PM

Let's see....

I listen to everything from

Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Lady GaGa, the Backstreet Boys to

Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, the Beach Boys, the Kinks to

Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Manowar, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Pantera to

Fates of Warning, Queensryche, Jethro Tull to

Dream Theater, Opeth, Symphony X to

Pink Floyd, Genesis, Gentle Giant, Supertramp, King of Crimson to

Radiohead, the Flower Kings, the Mars Volta to

Rakim, KRS-One, Tupac, Biggie, Nas, Jay-Z to

Mastodon, Kyuss, the Melvins, Queens of the Stone Age to

Miles Davis, John Coltrane, the Mahavishnu Orchestra etc

There are many more but why would I list them all?

s_k 11-18-2011 02:28 PM

You obviously have no taste of music at all. You just listen to anything that's on :D.

Well there's no accounting for taste, so you shouldn't really worry about what you're listening to, since it's all entirely subjective (unless it's Brokencyde of course...) :D
