Regarding King Gizzard - Unfortunately I was asked to guard the green room where the band were waiting, so I wasn't really best placed to experience the gig but I did get to chat to them. Should have taken my vinyl for them to sign. I could hear it clearly though, and they were fantastic as you would expect. Cool guys.

Surf guitar legend Dick Dale back in town for a show. Some guitar, a bit of harmonica, a couple of tunes on the trumpet, a few stories, and some more guitar. "80 years young!" and still playing with more energy than a lot of much younger musicians. |

Saw Peter Brötzmann, Toshinori Kondo and Heather Leigh yesterday.
Originally Brötz and Kondo were scheduled to play with Sabu Toyozumi and I was really looking forward to seeing him but he was sick so Leigh replaced him. It was a bit shocking to see how frail Brötzmann and Kondo are nowadays, standing close to the voluptuous Leigh they looked like hobbits. At first the trio didn't seem comfortable with each other with some awkward (yet still interesting) moments but as the concert progressed there were more and more instances of incredible beauty. Brötzmann was on fire as always, switching from tenor sax to tarogato and clarinet, Kondo was psychedelic as ****, Leigh was a bit underwhelming and samey but nonetheless providing an essential background. They were constantly switching between solo, duo and trio parts and things never got boring. It was over in just an hour and when people were demanding an encore, Brötzmann came out again, thanked everyone and said that "the lungs are empty" and the ending was beautiful as it was (it was indeed epic) so there won't be an encore. I didn't really mind. It was fun and I was glad to see those legends together.

so uh, Cloud Nothings/Japandroids was brilliant last night.
went early cause the band who opened for them are pretty solid and i wanted to catch their set. turns out everyone else had a different plan and therefore we were front row, dead centre, for the entire night. Cloud Nothings were everything i could've asked for and more. their set list had a few songs from the new album, but stayed mostly around Hear and Nowhere Else and Attack on Memory. Dylan is an amazing guitar player live, i think it's really easy to not hear all the intricacies when listening to them, but seeing him actually play really opened my eyes. the drummer is also a ****ing mad man who went off on his own multiple times. they played Pattern Walks and Wasted Days and they really did their own thing with the instrumentals in the mid part of the track. after their set i talked to dylan a little bit and i ended up with one of the drummer's drum sticks, so that was kinda cool. japandroids were really good as well. their anthemic music transferred really well to the small venue and their dynamic on stage was pretty impressive for a 2 man act. their was no following up Cloud Nothings (probably cause i like them way more) but Japandroids still had a really solid set and came out with a ton of energy. this is the band that opened for them, definitely give them a listen. really cool girls too.

I recently saw Albert Bouchard (Drums) with his brother, Joe Bouchard (Guitar), and Dennis Dunaway (Bass) as "Blue Coupe." The Bouchard brothers are original members and songwriters for Blue Öyster Cult, and Dennis is an original member and songwriter for the Alice Cooper band.
They played 3 songs they've written together as Blue Coupe, and the rest of the set was made up of songs they wrote while they were members of Blue Öyster Cult and the Alice Cooper band. A fun show of mostly "classic" rock songs from the early to mid 70's by both bands. Blue Coupe - Hot Rails to Hell Blue Coupe - Black Juju Blue Coupe - School's Out Blue Coupe - Astronomy (with Jim Bouchard joining in on guitar) |

I was in Brooklyn last night with a friend. We were waiting for our friends to get out of Iron and Wine (I'm not paying $40 to be sung lullabies) and we found a show happening down the road in the basement of a seafood restaurant. A band I really liked in high school, Cinemechanica, was playing with a band I've never heard of called DAD. DAD was okay but holy **** was Cinemechanica tight as sh*t. Brought me right back to my dirty basement shows considering they're a math rock/noise/post hardcore type of deal. Really energetic and just on total point. Best small show I've been to in a while. I ended up buying their record and we all drank some beers and kicked around a hacky sack afterwards. I felt like I was in High School again. Felt nice to be a care free lame punk kid again.
Anyway, if you're into that kind of music, check this out. |
