Just went to this at the weekend. As wonderful a day as it always is. I split my time between the headliners At The Gates and 40 Watt Sun. I'd never seen ATG before and was very excited to, but I also adore 40 Watt Sun and they really don't play often, so I went to the last 30 minutes to end the day with some chilled semi-acoustic wonderfulness. Altar of Plagues reunited for a one-off just to play this show and so that was a real treat. Maybeshewill said farewell before they disband, and as they have only announced 4 UK dates between this show and when they fold, I'm glad I saw them here. Amenra have previously clashed heavily, with Electric Wizard I believe. So I was very excited to see them too and they were great. Wiegedood, a band of Amenra's bass player, a belgian black metal band, were also great and I've been listening to them since. New to me were also Tacoma Narrows Bridge Disaster, who play instrumental sludge, atmospheric and gradual in its build and shifting in tempo. Ohmms were good but confusing. I cant decide if they were strange or geniuses. Ghold were somehow grim but alot of fun, at the same time. Deep vocals, powerful band, with some bounce to the riffing. Solstafir were enjoyable but also, more than likely due to their upbeat character and personalities, maybe viewed by some as not being terribly serious. While this wasnt a bad thing, I think its why I enjoy their records more. Mono were just astonishing. I am so, so happy I got to see them play. I also saw Undersmile, Crown and Oathbreaker. All were good. None were bad. They just didn't leave much of an impression on me. |

Ride Hazel English i have seriously been waiting for this show since 1994 Hazel English....apart from being amazingly stunning....was a really good start to the evening....there really is something to be said for musicians who are really into the music they create....and these kids were really into it....fun indie rock with a bit of a "Lush-esque" vibe.....worth looking into for sure starting with a short but appropriate tribute to the lose of life in paris france Ride opened with Twisterella ....and honestly played a lot of stuff form their later two albums....which in a way was awesome because i'm not very familiar with that material.....but after that I will be very much exploring those albums and EPs greedily....they basically played the entire A side to Going Blank Again and the fan favorites from Nowhere (save polar Bear) was really hoping they would play In A Different Place but got Decay instead which was wonderful.....they also did a very MBV noise interlude which...dare i say...was better than MBV seeing Dreams Burn Down and Mouse Trap live brought tears to my eyes..... The night ended when they left the stage and blared Kraftwerk "Neon Lights" this show falls under fucking amazing |

Went to a Vacationer show earlier this year. I didn't know it beforehand but they were just the opener. The headliner was RubbleBucket. They were super cool. Really great stage presence and real fun music. And at the end they released a bunch of balloons and played a NYC-subway style encore at the back of the venue by the bar with the crowd around them in a circle. I bought all of their albums not long after that show.

Some video I took at a recent show with Roberto Morbioli and his East Coast band playing at a long-time favorite venue (Johnny D's in Somerville, MA.) soon to be gone for good after 46 years worth of live shows most nights of the week, unfortunately.

Flamin' Groovies at the Brighton Music Hall in Brighton, MA. November 25, with Muck & The Mires, The Connection, and Fireking opening the show. The first 3 bands were fairly unremarkable garage rock (I had seen Muck & The Mires before) but they were enjoyable, nonetheless.
Flamin' Groovies played a solid set featuring mostly early to mid 70's era songs from their albums of that time. Flamin' Groovies Here are 4 of 6 videos I took of the Groovies, while I was in-between drinks... Flamin' Groovies - I Can't Hide Flamin' Groovies - St. Louis Blues Flamin' Groovies - Married Woman Flamin' Groovies - Slow Death The band had 3 tour posters for sale at their merch table, and since I'm a sucker for a good tour poster, I bought all 3... |

Saw Veruca Salt with Charly Bliss. Friend's kid is in The Mowglis. Saw them with Phases and Lights at Irving Plaza. Saw The Ocean Blue at Mercury Lounge the next night. Next week I have Deerhunter at Irving Plaza and Slater Kinney at The Kings Theater.

Last night I saw The Black Dahlia Murder, Goatwhore, Iron Reagan, and Entheos. The first band on the bill was Artificial Brain but I missed them. Everyone was great. I only caught the last few songs of Entheos' set but they sounded great. Iron Reagan was a complete surprise to me—badass classic crossover thrash and an amazing, entertaining as hell stage presence. Goatwhore, whose music I like but who seemed a little too serious last time I saw them live, were at the top of their game—balls to the walls playing and a fun, surprisingly lighthearted stage presence this time around. The Black Dahlia Murder were really good as well, maybe not quite as good as Goatwhore or Iron Reagan, but they still were fun and badass and their drummer is absolutely unbelievable live.
