I understand why they rag on em. I can also understand why other people don't. I for one don't give a hoot. It was a blast, and the entire bar was basically a live Black Sabbath, and Iron Maiden juke box.

I saw Kayo Dot on Wednesday. Enablers opened for them. The frontman for Enablers is an interesting fella. I could have watched up do this for hours...

Cannibal Corpse, Behemoth, Aeon
I braved freezing rain and hockey rink sidewalks to get to this show last night, but it was worth it. I was mostly going for Behemoth and they rocked the ass off the place. Inferno's drumming is bowel-obliteratingly amazing live. I was curious to see Cannibal Corpse, though not expecting much, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. There was something just right and raw and heavy as fuck about their live sound. Aeon I had never heard of before but they were some pretty solid death metal as well.

Retox, WHORES., Volatile Substance, Burmese

so Volatile Substance opened and were not that great....the singer was too jaded and in all honesty all i could here was a wall of noise and the tom drum....in the right situation that is purrfect....this was not

Burmese was up next....still some sound issues but this was good....a great mix of punk and grind type stuff with a very aggressive female vocalist....tons of humorous short songs and these kids really got into it

Whores. were great....just a great and super heavy set and then some great conversation about the state of noise rock with the singer/guitar player.....and discussion about them recording a full length album to be putout on none other than Amphetamine Reptile....which for a noise rock band is like dying and doing drugs in hell

Retox....ask WhateverDude....he was having tons of fun

I actually really liked Burmese's set, it just didn't seems as energetic of a band as Retox. JP brings it though. Course, chugging screwdrivers makes everything a hoot. The woman's vocals were so deep and guttural. And yeah... that guy from the first band seemed pretty disingenuous. I was kinda surprised by the turnout, I thought Retox were bigger. That's why the sound wasn't great... it's a lot better in the bigger part of the venue but if it ends up being a small crowd they don't bother setting up all the other stuff.

Well I just went to a six hour marathon of a show, and I loved every second of it. It was Chumped, Jeff Rosenstock, Smith Street Band, and Andrew Jackson Jihad and each band KILLED it. Chumped played a short little noisy pop rock set that was really contrasted well with the female lead vocals. Jeff Rosenstock was one of the people who I knew I had to see, and he was euqal to AJJ's set in my opinion. I could go into detail, but I will say he gave us his guitar at one point while the audience was playing he was manning the delay pedal. Smith Street Band was good but I was itching for AJJ so I didn't give them as much attention. And finally AJJ ruled they're set was great, mixed newer stuff from Christmas Island and mixed in a lot of reworked favorites. Sean played a new song by himself which is making me excited to see what they do with it very much going farther in the direction Christmas Island took them. They played Free Bird/Big Bird as the finale and everyone lost their ****. So yeah great show, I recommend it if they're coming near you all.

I saw Jeff the Brotherhood tonight. I couldn't tell if it was college kid suburban altrock or truepunx who went that route for the bux.weak crowd. Decent sets. Opening banf called Bully were really good.

Built To Spill

This was the forth time i've seen Built To Spill live....and as i've said before they are in my opinion one of the greatest live acts i've ever seen....they always have a good attitude, play extremely well and just always seem to up their recorded music just a bit live......this was not the case in any way shape or form on Thursday

so a couple of weeks ago my friend Rhiannon sent me a link to get a single ticket for a free show staring Built To Spill....obviously i went nuts ...The show was to be at a venue in downtown Reno called The Cargo and was to be a first come gets access till capacity type of deal and the entire thing was being put on by the Lagunitas Brewing Company (even better right!?)

doors were at 8 so we showed up at 6 and watched the line get bigger and bigger ....i brought 60 bucks for a couple of tasty brews and hopefully a copy of the new album on vinyl and a t shirt....some strange things started to happen about 40 or so minutes before the doors opened....half naked circus performers were emerging from the venue and performing for the waiting crowd....interesting...i also started to notice more and more that the people there just did not seem like the typical Built To Spill fan base.....it is Reno after all

Doors open and we all start shuffling in....as always i head straight for the bar in hopes of some good ol IPA....the bartender tells me that ALL Beer and Water are on the house....i start talking with one of the reps for Lagunitas and he explains that the brewery has been doing a contest online and that Reno won the free beer party......CHAOS REIGNS.

So my hypothesis is correct....80% of this "sold out" venue are not there for music....but rather to get extremely fucked up on free beer....thats all good....at least i get to see this incredible band with a few of my close friends....some opening band comes out and they're not bad....but not my cup of tea....almost like a sleazy version of CCR

Then comes Built to Spill....and they open with a cover of DEVO's immortal classic "Come Back Jonee"

i should be jumping for joy right?....the sound in this venue is fucking horrible....i mean really really bad

i attempted moving around the venue....front to back to left and right....but no where in this venue was the sound good....the bass was turned up way to loud and the vocals were almost non existent

to make matters worse as i'm trying position myself to get the most out of the band live....i have to navigate through hundreds of drunk college frat kids who could give two fucks about the great music being played for them....and i mean DRUNK.....Reno PD must have had a field day after this show let out

so i make it back up to the front to finish the night of with my friend Erin...and the most fucking ridiculous thing i've seen in years happens....during their encore....which was Randy Describes Eternity and a cover of Blue Öyster Cult's (Don't Fear) The Reaper the crowd starts a huge violent "mosh" pit

to Built To Spill.....

The look on Doug's face was as priceless as it was sad

way to represent Reno

Tame Impala - Rio

Fantastic show. No frills, just a great performance. Lots of jamming, as expected, lots of people smoking pot, as expected, and just a great relaxed vibe.
