I've always preferred listening to instrumental music while studying, I find that vocals can be a bit distracting while you are trying to think or solve problems. Usually a bit of post-rock, ambient or ambient electronica suits nicely, it does well to cut off your attention from the outside world yet doesn't distract you too much from what you are doing.

From what I've been told as well listening to classical music is good when trying to solve mathematics problems, it apparently stimulates the same brain patterns used when solving maths problems.

I know this sounds weird, but Scott Joplin is the best for when it comes to doing anything which involves solving problems logically (maths / physics / chemistry), and anything creative requires something which sounds similar to the emotion you are trying to capture, eg. something a bit creepy would be helped by "Just" from Radiohead.

I agree absolutely. Instrumental music does it for me. Ambient/Electronic can be really helpful as well.

I recommend off the top of my head:

I recommend classical music. Especially Mozart's Piano Sonatas.

Ravi Shankar is pretty good for meditating and concentration for me. Tchaikovsky and Bach are good classical choices. I also like listening to Boards of Canada when studying because it's chill. For Jazz which is also good, I like Thelonious Monk and Chet Baker.

I would agree with this point. Remember, the music itself shouldn't stimulate your mind, it should prevent distractions from intruding. Good classical music envelopes yet doesn't distract.

Rimsky-Korsokov might be a good choice. His music is very attention keeping yet rarely super thunderous.

It's the time of year where I'm almost exclusively listening to post-rock to get through term papers.

Rimsky-Korsakov is good too. Haven't listened to much by him lately, but Scheherazade is my favourite.
