Thank you for the information, Janszoom. I know what you mean. Prodigy are a three-piece with two vocalists and a multi-instrumentalist, but they are augmented for live work. Keith Flint has a crazy rock 'n' roll image which is undermined by him calling on elderly people in his street during bad weather.

Which is The Roots best album? Are there other rap groups which use live instruments, or are they a small minority?

I personally think Phrenology, but anything other than their debut is a classic in my opinion.

Thanks for that. I'll see if I can track it down.

Well, like I said, there aren't many who have a traditional configuration like The Roots, but there are plenty of cases where you have multi-intrumentalists playing various instruments. J Dilla is one example that comes to mind. I'm not super into him so I'm not privy to which instruments he played on which tracks, but just take a look at this picture of him in the studio. The man played everything you see and then some (yes, including cello):

Or give a listen to "Hey Ya" by Outkast, one of the most popular hip hop songs of the 00s. The lead vocalist you hear also played guitar and keyboard on this track.

i'm sorry i find it very funny that you claim to hate music about drugs but one of the only "rap" songs you like is White Lines (which is about the greatest drug of all time)

I took it as an anti-drug song.
