Yeah, it would have made a great final album.

yes. Their first 2 albums are their highlight.

Accelerate was just alright. But still in the low percentage of their output in terms of greatness.

best post-Automatic album is New Adventures in Hi-Fi.

Does nobody appreciate their later music? I don't care which album they finished on. I'm just glad they managed to bring out albums like New Adventures and Reveal.

Reveal? Only album that lowers the bar anymore than that one is "Around the Sun".

It's clear their best days were behind them, but still, nobody can be 'happy' that one of the greatest alternative bands of all time are officially finished.

I agree with you about their best work being the recordings they did while they were with IRS records.
Especially 'Chronic Town,' 'Murmur,' and 'Reckoning.'
Those three are must-haves!

In terms of the archetypal R.E.M sound I get exactly where you are coming from although I still really like Monster even though it got panned by virtually everyone and they have been steadily going downhill from there.

However, excluding their hits (of many I did like), they were a solid band with a distinct sound and put out some real class tracks in their time.

I thought it was good, like all their albums (there isn't actually an REM album I don't like). I think it showed that they still had it in them and could easily carry on making good albums, even if they aren't to the quality of their earlier ones.
