Straight-Edge

Straight Edge is something a lot of indie and emo kids participate in, and im sure it spans the genres. However, there seems to be some disagreement between it.

First off, I'd just like to say that people should be straight edge only if they believe in it, not just because they want to be hardcore. anyways.

This is how I know straight edge as: No drugs, and no drinking (for the most part.)
This is how some websites I've visited define it: No drugs, no drinking, no sex, and always buy music(no downloading).

Personally, I really think that sex and buying music have almost nothing to do with straight edge, especially moreover with buying music.

Well to what I know straight edge is no violence, no drinking, no smoking, no sex, and no violence, and some people take it too far to a point were straight edge is also being a vegetarian. Well I was reading everything about straight edge and if you guys are interested in reading than go here

you want a debate, i am very, very anti straight-edge. no drinking? no sex? no downloading? why do it to yourself.

ArtistInTheAmbulance 04-22-2005 10:00 AM

What kind of a life is that. Even nuns get out more than that... I bet theyre allowed to download stuff. Besides, half the 'emo kids' that say theyre straight edge wouldnt even know what it meant. It just means more scene points for them.

is that some kindof sick cult or somethin?

riseagainstrocks 04-22-2005 05:18 PM

Straight Edge as it was originally was designed was to promote a non-drug vegan lifestyle. No drinking was not a founding tenant. the guys in Minor Threat drunk. alot. it was no drugs, no medicine (when at all possible), no meat, and no casual sex.

i am edge to an extent. i eat meat. and drink on occasion. i can't really call my self edge anymore no can i? drugs are lame though.

.angie. 04-22-2005 05:21 PM

the only ones i have heard are: no drinking, no drugs, no sex. and that i totally agree with cuz im only 15 and i find all of those to be for much more mature people. and i dont wanna screw up my life when im so young.

EDGE 04-22-2005 05:57 PM

No drugs.
No drinking.
And yes, you can have sex, but only if you're in a commited relationship.
Straight edge is basically living a poison free life.
Not having sex is a safe way to live, I suppose.
But if you're doing it right, you're not breaking edge.
Some people don't take medication, nor drink caffeine.
If you're on the verge of DEATH, yeah, you can take the meds.
Insane, much?

Jonah 04-23-2005 09:11 AM

Anyone who listens to Minor Threat should know Ian Mckay...he decided to go against the grain because of a couple things. A. Many of his friends turned into alcoholics, drug addicts, etc. B. The venues Ian and his friends would go to, soon turned into bars, and under aged people were of course turned away.

The concept of straight edge has made its way into modern culture, and thus adapted more modern concepts such as caffeine, sex, and vegan/vegetarianism. There are no "set rules" for living straight edge, because it's what one makes it out to be for themselves; personal fulfillment and achievement. Jumping on the straight edge bandwagon may be considered a trend, but wtf, why not support something that is designed to better one's self? I think this way of thinking and living is amazing, and I'm glad to see people are part of it.

As for myself, I guess you could call me straight edge. I don't smoke, drink, do drugs, and I'm vegan.... However, I'm not one to throw up X's on my hands or have straight edge tattoos. I know people who are hardcore and devoted to the lifestyle of straight edge, and I support that, it's cool with me.... I’m just not as outspoken about being straight edge, but if you ask me, I'll be willing to tell you that I don't smoke or drink...etc.

All_Nite_Dinah 04-23-2005 02:21 PM

I think Jonahs the onl one whos really given a good explanation. Straight Edge is a movement that evolved out of the 80's hardcore scene(particualary DC) as an alternate lifestyle that questioned much of what was going on in the scene. Straight edge 3 main ideals were 1.No drug 2. No Alcohol 3. No promisuis sex. Anti-violence was DEFINETLY not a part of the original movement as many sXe kids were militantly so(paritcularly Uniform Choice amongst others). All of this stuff like no downloading music, must be vegan, no medacine, no this no that are all just stuff people have decided to try and implement in for themselves. As far as emo kids being edge its most likely because its trendy and cool. I think most people are opposed to the sxe movement because its got a really bad reputation as a bunch of jocks. I myself dont like to subscribe to any label let alone all the crap baggage that comes with straight edge but I have made a concious decision not to drink or do drugs al long time ago. There not that cool or important. But I also dont think less of anyone for taking part in activiteis I see as silly.

stonedpath 04-23-2005 04:49 PM

whoever doesnt do drugs and doesnt have sex is an idiot

ArtistInTheAmbulance 04-23-2005 04:53 PM

No... Theyre just living how they want to. I couldnt do it, but still... Good for them , I guess. Theyll probably live longer than I ever do, so good luck to them.

I am straight edge in a way. I believe that drugs (illegal drugs) are wrong and casual sex is as well, unless you are in a SERIOUS relationship.

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-01-2005 11:49 AM

Wow how dull

Anything in excess is bad for you , It`s about knowing when to stop.

I`ve done drugs before , I`ve always had a job , I`ve never turned up for work high or drunk , I`ve never been an addict , I`ve never been an alcoholic. Drugs are not the bad things that everybody makes out.

I think people should experiment once in a while , it really opened my eyes the first time I took acid & E`s. I`ve been offered stronger drugs but I chose to say no as I thought Acid & E`s were my limit & taking anything stronger scared me.

As for sex , well i`ve never really understood what all the fuss about that is. People make it out to be so important. In reality it`s just 10 minutes of puffing & panting with a damp patch at the end of it.

10 minutes? Show off!

Never been straight edge, in fact, not even close. But I really respect people that are, and if I had any self control, I would be as well.

Fenixpunk 06-01-2005 12:26 PM

Lock up your broccoli the sXe kids are coming

AprilMay 06-01-2005 01:38 PM

My favourite straight edge moment was when 3 straight edge kids were on Richard and Judy it was just so random.

hiu 06-01-2005 01:53 PM

Im freinds with some straight edge people and I respect them but I would rather just do what I want. Straight edge has just become the cool thing to do these days, I dont see the point in that. Besides Ian drinks now anyway.

Tommyrocker 06-01-2005 05:05 PM

why isn't this in the punk forum? just a thought.

Alcohol is a very powerful and dangerous drug.

I guess I don't really consider myself straight edge (don't like to label myself as anything), but I have seen enough of what the non-straight edge style life can do to you to make me want to be clean. I don't drink, smoke, do drugs, have casual sex, etc., but like I said, I try not to label myself. To each his own though, and if someone wants to thats their business and I don't judge them for it. Just don't come whining to me in the end and say how you screwed up your life. :wavey:

I'm not straight-edge.
BUT...the trick is to keep your vices under control.

That's what I do. I only allow myself to shoot-up crystal meth into my eyeballs once a week.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!! :D :D straight-edge is for losers that are too ugly to get laid and too young to get drunk and/or have no means of obtaining said intoxicants.

Or just too smart to screw up their lives...

Spike*Spiegel 06-01-2005 09:00 PM

AHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!! :D really, you made my day a lot brighter with this thread.

I'm in college, starting a career and getting married. I have a wonderful life going for me and I have had my share of experience with all the afformentioned. I'm not screwed up, in fact I think I'm pretty well-off. It depends on the type of person you are, really.

Many straight edge people I know have sex but they are in a commited relationship. Straight edge is about not having promiscuous sex. They have drunk but they made the decision not to drink anymore. I think it's quite a good choice.

Spike*Spiegel 06-02-2005 09:32 PM

for me, no. for other people, it's probably a great thing but then there are those few irritating kids that try to make a big deal out of being straight. I'm sorry if i sounded like an assh0le but I've had that **** shoved in my face so much, it's not funny anymore. I just saw the thread and had myself a good laugh. i'm sure not all straight-edge people are not stupid little pricks like the ones i've met.

my boyfriend is straight-edge. we've been together for a long time, and he's not ugly at all. we're just not ready to take that step. he's been drunk, he's been high.. but he noticed what it was doing to his body. he was sick all the time, so he stopped. and he hasn't gotten sick like that since. i used to drink and blah blah blah.. but i quit because it's easier to be sober than to have a hangover from hell.. :usehead:
