Secondly, in many acts, they are the support instrument. They not only have to know how to play everything, but they have to fit between bigger egos, filling out riffs, melodies, or supporting harmonics. They are the workhouse of the group, adding muscle, novelty, and flare to music.

Sun Ra definitely played keyboard. He's legendarily known as somebody who very vastly pioneered the instrument, at least in a Jazz context.
As for keyboards 'sounding like ass', that's vast ignorance. |
