The OP said women don't count for some reason.

You can say what you will about Keith Emerson, but the way he played and treated his instrument was pretty rock 'n roll

Definetly not nerdy!

The OP is badly worded, the question isnt 'why are all keyboard players nerdy' but 'why are all nerds keyboard players'... at least thats how I read it. Like if you see a photo of a band and one looks a bit more geeky than the others you're pretty much guaranteed that he'll be on keys. I mean look at Dream Theater for example, you just know the nerdy one is on keyboards....

Oh, Dream Theater are probably a bad example.

"Like if you see a photo of a band and one looks a bit more geeky than the others you're pretty much guaranteed that he'll be on keys." Although I meant my post as I worded it, that happens to be true. Even in that example, I figured it was either the Asian guy (Asian stereotypes) or the guy second from the right (correct answer, kind of a rugged clothing style in a "tough guy" band, but his face and background say "nerd"). If I could re-do the post title, it would be "Why are Keyboard Players Not Very Masculine?" Some might not be nerdy, but then they're effeminate. Again, with the only high-profile overtly "macho" keyboard player I know of being Gregg Rolie (and he was virtually a lead vocalist for a while, so he barely fits the category). I suppose Keith Emerson is less nerdy than the other big names, but I don't know enough to say he isn't nerdy compared to other categories of famous musicians.

You don't play keyboard to get all of the ladies like a lot of other instruments. You play keyboard to be good at keyboard. And make some **** that sounds good.

Maybe that's why. It's the first answer that came into my head when I read this.

That's part of it, but drumming probably don't get the chicks either and drummers tend to be macho guys. Drumming itself is a manly act, excluding jazz style. Keyboards - no manly intrinsic or extrinsic awards

Whatttt? Dude, drummers were always considered super hot at school.
And so were guitarists.

I'm not a woman, so I could be wrong. Tommy Lee has done better with women than any keyboard player. Still, drummers rank below singers and guitarists on chick appeal.

But higher than keyboard players! That is the point here.
