Of course your generalising... I'm seventeen and all my favourite albums are from the seventies! But essentially you're right, the vast majority of for example dubstep listeners are under 25, whereas I think most Boz Scaggs listeners are over fifty (except me of course!).

I guess it comes from the desire to be different from older generations, and I think also the more modern music styles seem to reflect the more modern lifestyles that we live.

Coldplay I think are a good example of this because Brian Eno has made their pop music particularly synthesized which makes what was acoustic slow pop very influenced by the Beatles style (I mean the songs from Parachutes here), to very modern and highly processed pop which is exactly what many of us younger people like.

And of course this is also a very common opinion, the old "modern pop sucks! I like real music, and by that I mean Led Zeppelin..." opinion.
Although can't you at least accept that this is equally boring and a lot more obnoxious than kids who only listen to the pop hits?

As I said, I love albums from the seventies the most, but I'm always very pleased to enjoy modern albums as well, to name a few and progressive bluegrass really excites me (Punch Brothers, Nickel Creek, Steeldrivers etc...), and I enjoy Olly Murs more than I've ever like Pink Floyd!

Yeah sorry, of course I'm oversimplifying. Obviously not EVERY young person thinks that way --- before I finished work there was a younger guy (22 maybe, I'm not sure) who suddenly went on and on about how amazing DSOTM is. It's so gratifying to be able to introduce someone to a new experience like that. And some --- many --- younger minds/ears are open and receptive.

But a huge proportion look at for instance all the music I like --- regardless of genre --- as "dad rock", or worse, "grandad rock". Like, no-one could produce music before there were CDs and ipods. I get that a lot. Damn kids, send 'em all into the army, do 'em good, days work for a days payzzzzzzz.........

Haha, yes I really hope I didn't come across as saying that was what you were suggesting!

I think however there are certainly far fewer older people who are interested in more modern popular music though, I haven't met many older Coldplay fans, and I think with the exception of Howard the Duck, very few older fans of Justin Bieber.

I'm an older Coldplay fan (49) and I don't discount new music just because it IS new --- I'm always looking for new things. But as far as JB goes, well I'd be a fan of burning him at the stake, although actually that would be wasting precious natural resources...

I hate soulless music that's manufactured with no love of the genre, no idea of the history behind it and only sees $$$ (or here, €€€€)

Music should SAY something (other than, "your current bank balance is....")

Must go take my medication now... I'm not supposed to get excited or agitated.

Not till I've shared a romantic night with him in a hotel bedroom you won't!!!! Don't know who'd get in more trouble for that mind you.

Now this is interesting. No doubt there is certainly in many artists a tendancy to make their style fit what people like, but of course the most remembered and distinguished artists are the ones who've developed their own which have subsequently became popular, or the innovators as you may say.

I won't claim that Coldplay or indeed many other pop artists do that much, but I think there's certainly a case for the fact that they do want them to express themselves and people want to hear it.

really? i'm not saying contemporary music is bad i'm just saying the groups/artist at the forefront now are totally trash compared to who was popular in the 60's at least 75% of the groups.

i prefer what you call "dad rock" more because it has soul and i can feel it naturally..nothing is forced...maybe because when i was a child my parents would always play it for me..and when i was inside my mother's belly she would play the beatles next to her stomach almost everyday..

Not yet, I've only heard the first single and it seemed very dance poppy to my ears, didn't care for it but might need repeated listens..
