I don't listen much to Coldplay, but I did get their debut album when it came out which had hits like Trouble and Yellow. It was a good album. Not the sort of music which excites me the most, but the songs were good.
I think Coldplay are hated because any band that becomes awesomely popular will come under immense scrutiny and will become unhip. Little faults that people happily accept in lesser known groups and artists are seen as huge problems for popular bands like Coldplay. So many people tailor their music tastes to become part of their image and liking Coldplay, a band liked by so many people who are not musically explorative, is regarded as really uncool by many. I think hating on bands for such reasons is quite fake and pretentious. edit : I think their popularity is largely due to having very effective songs. Most of them are catchy, singable and often easy to play along to on a guitar. I also think beautiful melancholy was part of the recipe for the success of their debut at least. Not sure if they're melancholic still.

They're terrible and there is already an insufferable thread about them.

Because they're popular. It takes no effort to like them. If you turn on the radio, you hear a Coldplay song. It's too simple, not musically challenging. Plus people want to feel like they're unique and interesting and they think liking a band which is embraced by so many casual radio listeners (the musically unexplorative) will make them look like someone who's not particularly interested in exploring music and just like what the masses like.
So I think them being unhip and uncool doesn't have that much to do with their music. Had they made the kind of music they do while remaining under the pop radar and avoiding massive success, people in general probably would've thought they were cooler.

Yeah, I've only heard their debut, but that's probably true. Still, I'm sure most people will happily accept a fault like that f.ex in their favourite blues artist. Problems like that are magnified with the star status of the band.

I bought their debut album, but was bored with it long before they became really popular. 'God Put A Smile On Your Face' and 'Clocks' were alright, but it was all very much downhill from there.
I find them dreadfully dull - I imagine their concerts are filled with people who drive Range Rovers or BMW's and all the guys wear beige slacks and drape their sweater sleeves over their shoulders. |

I happen to like them (runs....)
A mate at work gave me a copy of "A rush of blood to the head", I played it not expecting much and found I loved it. I then listened to "Parachutes" and "X and Y", and liked both of them, though I must admit I haven't yet listened to either of the two since. I'm not one of these who refuses to listen to music just because everyone else says it's crap. I make up my own mind. Coldplay probably would not have been a band I would have investigated, but now that I have I find I like their music. Whether they deserve all the vitriol they get is another thing, but as far as I'm concerned those three albums are great, esp "A rush of blood". PM me if you need an up... TH

I too try to think for myself rather than letting myself be manipulated by a bands popularity or the cool kids' general attitude towards them. Many great bands have been or still are uncool to like.
