While your comments about a lack of diversity in their records is fair, I don't see why Coldplay are the band most associated with this trait.
Other commercially successful bands such as Oasis, Foo Fighters and Snow Patrol constantly churn out albums of near identical material, yet aren't as heavily criticized as Coldplay.
Also, I'd argue that Coldplay are a far better band than the three I just listed.

I can't say I enjoyed Viva La Vida. I felt it was over-produced and too ballad driven. I preferred the simpler, earlier workings.

I like Trouble, however I will not argue it's similar to Yellow. Similar in the way Clocks is similar to Speed of Sound etc.

Look at Nirvana, they gave us albums with songs which are more or less identical to one an other, yet Cobain and co. are considered as legends of their craft.
I don't see what people want from Coldplay.
Perhaps if Chris Martin mumbled alienated youth rhetoric about 'sticking it to the man' and did drugs, maybe people would begin to like them, who knows?

I agree with all of this. You could say that Oasis went one step further and stole everything from the Stone Roses except charm and musical artistry. Snow Patrol are even worse, I think every cliche Coldplay have fallen into, they have too but made even less of an effort. At least they vary the key and tempo in Coldplay.

I'm not a fan of Nirvana either, but that's probably well known to you...

Yeah man, I'm not a massive Coldplay fan, I just feel as if they are the sort-of-podgy kid who's relentlessly bullied in the playground, whilst nobody says anything to the kid who's shaped like a whale.

I beg to differ. I think Foo Fighters have the pop melodic appeal, rootsy rock swagger, and sensitive heaviness (not to mention some sorta clever lyrics) that make them a much more distinguishable band than the post-Britpop, early Radiohead/U2 sounds Coldplay mass produces.

Well, based on my recent acquisition of Snow Patrol's 2008 release A Hundred Million Suns, I'm going to say that it's rather insulting that there are so many comparisons between the two bands, especially since Snow Patrol actually enjoy stretching out stylistically. Hell, the album bookends with a 16-minute epic fit for a Porcupine Tree record!

Hell no, they are totally different bands with different types of music, it's stupid to compare them!
