Finished already after only two posts? Damn!

I disagree, Viva La Vida was probably their best work to date. The songs are more complex, the sound more satisfying and rewarding, and it feels more conceptual, challenging and interesting to me - I honestly hope they continue in the vein they have started on Viva La Vida...

I always thought Coldplay was fairly run of the mill-never really offered anything new or unique, just kind of chill piano rock. However I think they would sound really cool if they played their instruments with more of a progressive, more experimental style.

Coldplay to me has just become a wanna be U2 these days. VLV was a decent album at best. X&Y was just a turd. Coldplay were in their prime when they started out with chill acoustic guitars and nice airy atmospheres. I mean parachutes is one of my favorite albums from this decade its just so comforting each song is great. it did sound a little Jeff buckleyish but it still was their own thing. "Rush" was not that bad either it showed that they wanted to take on the world but it wasn't as strong as parachutes in my opinion. There past two albums haven't really been that strong to be honest.

I'm of a similar opinion I think. I've taken some time to listen to Parachutes lately, and I really don't see anything wrong with it or anything, but if I want to chill out then there's dozens of other artists (read: any Post-rock or half-decent Ambient-oriented band) who excell far better without coming off as something manufactured by commercial interests. Maybe I'd feel a bit more interested if Chris Martin could actually sing worth a damn beyond the studio, but yeah....

Maybe I just don't understand why so many people love (and, in the case of some people I've met, obsess over) Coldplay when there's so many other bands to discover and learn about. As far as their supposed atmospheric quality goes, they're the musical equivalent of watching white paint dry on the neighborhood fence.

How does liking a band preclude you from discovering and enjoying other bands....exactly?

Also, despite your valiant effort at dry humor, I'd just like to say that there's nothing as unoriginal and dull as people who diss on Coldplay. 99% say the same god damn thing over and over and over and over and over again. Really people, not tired of it yet? At least try to make an effort at substantial criticism.

Meh. I used to like them about 3 months ago, but now they are as boring as heck. And their videos are worse than The Simpsons' animation circa 1989. And what's all this obsession with Girls Aloud? I'm sorry to offend you Coldplay but GA would never make out with you, unless they were seriously drunk.

Shucks, guess they'll just have to make do with Gwyneth Paltrow.

1. Nothing precludes ME from liking and discovering other bands even when some of my likes are fairly mainstream (I enjoy the Foo Fighters to an extent, but at the same time I adore John Zorn) but I hope you aren't going to tell me that the average joe who listen soley to whatever tripe wins a Grammy or what his/her friends say is hip/cool are going to seek out different music on their own time. In general, folks simply don't think of music as something worth investigating. All they know about is whatever is getting advertised on T.V./MySpace and in magazines.

2. Just because I said Coldplay are boring doesn't mean I think they're bad by any means. Instrumentally they're well done and, to be honest, not as godawful at songwriting as some would like to believe. In my opinion, people have the right to diss a band when that band is atrocious, but Coldplay isn't such. They're simply a fine example of an unremarkable outfit that has managed to do quite well commercially, so a lot of the virulent hate you often see is IMO undeserved.
