I went out and bought Be Not Nobody from Vanessa Carlton after hearing A Thousand Miles and I wasn't disappointed in the rest of the album. I would fall asleep listening to her voice and her tickling of the ivories.
She did a lovely cover of Paint It Black. I still love this song to this day and I love how she keeps the rolling piano idea going from album to album with a single from each album.

I like Paul Simon. He always seems to be evolving with his music, never really sounding the same from album to album. Just always looked like a simple man with a great gift.
Graceland is one of my favorite albums from him still. Another one is Lisa Miskovsky. Just an awesome talent. |

Thank you, everyone, for your additions to the thread!
Yesterday I happened upon some YouTube videos by Julie Feeney, an "award-winning Irish composer, song-writer, singer and music producer" (Julie Feeney - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). Although I can't say I like much of her music, her song "Aching" made an impression on me. I was impressed not so much by the song itself (which is rather slow and repetitive and sounds like a watered-down Enya) or by her singing (although it sounds intimate and sweet, and the way she holds the notes is interesting and verges on powerful)...but by her *conviction*. By ghod, she has conviction behind her music, and that is a beautiful thing. Also, I love one aspect of the video for "Aching" that caught me by surprise: the visual metaphor of colors dripping down from the crown of her head over her face to symbolize how she is affected by her emotions for someone. That detail held my attention and made the song more meaningful to me: Julie Feeney - "Aching" * * * I listened to several other songs (or actually just parts of songs) by Julie Feeney and haven't found any others that I enjoy particularly, but there was one that has a nice meaning behind the lyrics, even though the melody's flighty path and lightness aren't my favorite style: Julie Feeney - "Love is a Tricky Thing" Too light, playful and delicate for my tastes, but I do like the message and the use of string instruments.

I`m glad I tried your clip of the song Aching, Vegangelica, and I agree with your comments - the whole song hinges on her fabulous delivery of the word "aching", which makes it very unusual.
Il Duce has already posted a classic, and a personal favourite, Madame George , so I thought I`d offer a lesser-known story-song by Paul Brady :- Here you go,ejp111491! If this is the song you meant, yes, it`s pretty good :- Last edited by Lisnaholic; 10-09-2011 at 01:36 PM. Reason: adding an extra clip |
