Early Anathema was death metal. Opeth has always been death metal. Meshuggah is a fusion of death, thrash, and progressive metals. And Agalloch incorporates a lot of death metal elements, though they are rarely labeled as such.

Are you counting doom death as being closer to doom or death metal on the metal spectrum? I've always viewed it as more doomy so that could explain the disagreement on Anathema. Opeth have often times used death metal and Meshuggah are very much technical death metal. Agalloch has no death metal elements what so ever. A bit of black metal, but no death metal.

Admittedly The Mantle as well as the bulk of their work is significantly mired in post-rock and acoustic contributions, but the 2006 album showcased a heavier side to the band, utilizing thrash riffs and much faster time signatures than they displayed on any other album.

I thought I'd touch on two things:
1) Smooth Jazz- There are a couple pieces that I may occasionally enjoy, but overall this genre of music belongs in elevators. Quite generic stuff, if you ask me. 2) Classical- I was never a classical fan until I recently gave Mozart a close listen. He blew me away. Truly a musical genius. And if anyone disagrees with that statement, then they are just plain wrong. The skill it takes to create such in-depth music must be incredible. My favorite piece by him is "Piano Concerto in D Minor." In my opinion one of the greatest musical pieces ever written. Now I'd like to get more familiarized with Beethoven and Bach. But anyway, back to my initial point, there's no denying that classical music takes an incredible amount of talent.
