what's the difference between alternative and rock? Plus grammar chat with the mods.

huh?

jackhammer 05-22-2011 06:36 PM

They are spelt differently?

Janszoon 05-22-2011 06:53 PM

This will probably come as a surprise but alternative rock is a type of... rock.

Burning Down 05-22-2011 07:34 PM

The difference is this - stop making threads with no content.

I know the thread is closed but I just wanted to point out very quickly that "spelt" isn't a word in US English and instead one would say "spelled". I find that difference interesting as my spellcheck is even not recognizing it. Okay, yes. Closed. Sorry.

Your spellcheck probably doesn't recognize "colour" either. It's because you have it set on "US English" instead of "UK English".

Freebase Dali 05-22-2011 07:56 PM

Fuck closed threads.

Come to Canada, where we use both US and UK spelling! Wheeeee!!!!!!! Spelt is also correct. As it burnt/burned, learnt/learned, dreamt/dreamed, etc.

That sounds pretty great. I don't really care for the extra U in color or honor, but I've always loved the way program is spelled as "programme".

Paedantic Basterd 05-22-2011 08:28 PM

Or "centre", "theatre" and "cheque". Also, we get to use both Zs and Ss in words like "realised".

Ah, Canadian laziness.

Burning Down 05-22-2011 08:41 PM

I've always been told to use Z's. Even more so when writing academic papers. Plus I don't like the way the words look when spelled with an S...

Paedantic Basterd 05-22-2011 08:42 PM

Hm. Maybe I picked up the Ss from the Aussies. I tend to agree that I like the look of the Z better though.

Freebase Dali 05-22-2011 11:02 PM

Anyone ever try to phonetically spell a U, then pause in indecision?
