Yes, Lord Dweedle, Joan Jett is pretty good too. From The Runaways on through her solo work, she still rocks as hard as most men! Still looks great too despite being in her 50's!

Vocals traditionally have dominated the musical texture of most solo artists anyway.
I think Dylan is more about lyrics than vocals, and Bon Iver is more of a package deal with focus on the writing, feeling, and music as well.

Well the lyrics come through his vocals so I think they have to have a part to play. And Bon Iver does have an overall atmosphere thing going, but people do go on about his voice alot, particularly with the first album. Both of them have a very calculated vocal style as well so I think it is part of the music. It isn't a really virtuoso vocal I suppose and maybe women do that more, but not all have in the past (eg Carole King).

I think generally nowadays people are more and more obsessed with vocals anyway, whether female or male. Some people I think like The National's music because again they like the atmosphere they feel comes from the vocal. And again with the Tallest Man on Earth guy. I don't like this kind of music, I want more in the music and less just about the vocal atmosphere.

I'm sure it has been mentioned before, but Jenny Lewis anyone?

'Ho can write some lyrics and perform like a mo'fo.

Also, Regina Spektor. Julia Nunes. Karen O. The list goes on (and on, and on).

Check out Fever Ray, and Screaming Females. The chick in that band is a lot more talented than most male frontmen.

Yep good choice.

IMo there are some genres of music that are more suited to a male or female voice. Sometimes I think that when Dead can Dance, Attrition or Black Tape for a Blue Girl 'swap' singers that the male voice is somehow wrong for the track.

I love female vocalists, but I think sometimes when there is a male-dominated band with a female lead singer, the girl sometimes steals the spotlight because she is a female in a male-dominated domain...

In all honesty I listen to more male vocals and male instrumentalists than female ones but I'm more interested in quality rather then gender.
