The Who. Started as a decent Mod band with great hooks and a balls out attitude but then decided to make thematic Prog albums that were over indulgent unfocused pieces with the odd glimpse of a band that were dying to get to back to basics if it weren't for an ego on guitar. Who Are You and You Better You Bet are just 2 examples of a mediocre band making music that is akin to pub rock. Such a shame from a band that gave us My Generation, 5:15 and I Am The Sea.

How do you feel about The Who Sell Out? I kind of think of it as the opposite of Tommy or something... I think they get away with the "concept album-ness" because they're basically mocking themselves and the music industry. Also has some of their best songs.

I hate most mainstream mainly because it is force fed way over the number of listens a track might usually warrant. I can't stand much 'classic rock' because it was piped through the workplace for years where I used to work and you could seriously set your watch by their play lists. I mean come on they recorded other freaking songs do you have to regurgitate the same freaking tracks every freaking day?!?!?!?!? Maybe give your listeners some credit and broaden their freaking horizons?

CanwllCorfe 05-03-2011 08:45 PM

I hate entire genres! I can't say I'm a fan of Country, Bluegrass, and most Rock genres. Ironically, they're quite big on here. One that comes to mind is Progressive Rock. Don't ask why, because this is the "inexplicable" thread. I couldn't tell you. I just don't enjoy most Rock.

Janszoon 05-03-2011 08:52 PM

I used to have an inexplicable hatred of The Smiths, then about six years ago I inexplicably started liking them.

I feel like Morrissey might explain both of those things.

Freebase Dali 05-03-2011 10:37 PM

I inexplicably find merit in pretty much anything I listen to, but the prerequisite for that is some sort of drug intake, and/or other damage to the brain. One time, I got my ass kicked in a brawl and I had absolutely no problem with the music that was on the radio on the drive home. It was like I wasn't even thinking about it.

Stephen 05-03-2011 10:56 PM

Female vocalists.

I have a few in my collection that I like. Etta James, Lisa Gerrard, PJ Harvey but on the whole they (other female vocalists) either leave me pretty cold or turn my stomach. Don't know why...

Go **** yourselves, seriously, both of you.

Howard the Duck 05-04-2011 02:48 AM

Rancid

Bad Religion

s_k 05-04-2011 03:07 AM

I mentioned Marillion. Another band I genuinely dislike altough they seem to fit somewhere in my range of preferred musical styles is Pearl Jam.

Mrd00d 05-04-2011 04:13 AM

Foo Fighters. I could attempt to explain it, but why bother.

James 05-04-2011 05:36 AM

Arcade Fire.

Howard the Duck 05-04-2011 05:37 AM

Stereophonics also.

Oh! It's become so common for me to dislike female vocalists that I completely forgot! I only have a Janis Joplin record and an old No Doubt Record. And I don't mind female vocals in the occasional Belle & Sebastian Song. But that's really it. I totally dislike female vocals.

Scarlett O'Hara 05-04-2011 06:04 AM

Hello? The Cranberries? Only the sexiest Irish female singer ever?

s_k 05-04-2011 06:12 AM

I haven't got a clue what she looks like which is probably the reason I want to smack her in the face every time she drones 'uuuhuh, uuuhuhh.. uhhuuuhh'.
Keep your friggin' voice under control, missy.
I really hate the cranberries :D.

Googled her.
Now please don't let me run into her.
Short hair Vanilla, you should have known ;).

What? You don't know them?
They were just as famous as The Cranberries in that era.
And... bands like Live and Pearl Jam and such.

Scarlett O'Hara 05-04-2011 06:20 AM

Oh I've heard her, just didn't recognise the name. She's nothing on Dolores.

Howard the Duck 05-04-2011 06:25 AM

There's just one thing worse than female singers and that's female chinese singers :D.
And to prove I'm not gay; I cannot have sex when I hear a male voice. Meaning I cannot have sex when listening to music :D.

I usually put on abstract jazz cos sex is pretty abstract to me

i mean it's totally unaesthetic

s_k 05-04-2011 06:27 AM

Jazz would work fine indeed :)

Urban Hat€monger ? 05-04-2011 10:31 AM

Even though I've not heard one of their songs since about 1993 I've always had an intense hatred of The Cocteau Twins.

Everything about them just makes me want to repeatedly smack a tire iron into their simpering smug faces.

Nooooooooooooooooo :(

One thing I do admit though, even though I love Cocteau Twins and they have an incredibly consistent discography, sometimes when I listen to them I get the impression that they are holding back from something really special, like they are on the verge of something out of this world but never quite get there.

Raust 05-04-2011 10:58 AM

Avenged Sevenfold
Hinder
Slipknot
Pretty easy pickings, but these bands I really can't stand. I've mentioned it in other threads with the similar topic.

I think if Robin Guthrie had a bit more musicianship in him that would be true, but he's a producer not a songwriter. He is the master of creating a very simple chord progression and building layers upon layers over it until you get the crazy ethereal world that makes up their music. He knows it, too.

Just look at what he did to Lush's album Spooky. They had real music behind their songs but he insisted they just layer up on that ****. It turned that album into Lush featuring Robin Guthrie. He doesn't know how to write actual songs.

This may sound like bashing...but it's not. I'm just being realistic. I freakin love the Cocteau Twins.

For the most part I also have an aversion to female vocalists. There are a few that I like very much, but mostly they leave me cold and turning away.

YES! They're alright sometimes, but except their first album, most of their music is totally generic and boring. They can't come up with a memorable riff to save their lives. And their first album is tolerable only cause it's so commercial. The first half is memorable (though I don't know why it's considered grunge), while the second half just bores. Did I also mention how pretentious they are? I bought their album Vitalogy on cassette from a thrift store a year or so ago, and it had this wierd booklet with it that had all this pseudo-religious and philosophocal bull**** on it. It wouldn't have bothered me so much, but the album had a bunch of boring songs on it, one radio friendly single (Betterman), and a bunch of pretentious spoken word **** that have to be fast forwarded through. So, yeah, **** Pearl Jam.
