Add that to being a self educated, well read, and musically prodigious black youth in the 1920s, and you have an unsung American Hero.
This.

I'll admit that he's not my favorite musician but I definitely have a lot of respect and appreciation for what he did.

Keiji Haino, Sun Ra, John Fahey, Albert Ayler, Noah Lennox

etc.

If I had to pick one it'd likely be Fahey.

This is a funny question because I know everyone is expecting me to say Hendrix or SRV. To be honest though I would have to say that Aerosmith is my most respected band. Ive never been like a huge Aerosmith fan or anything, but I respect what they have accomplished through the years. More so the fact that they all survived, and strung their act together for over 35 years. Seems like most the greats die at an early age or fall victim to their own demise and break up. I think theirs something to be said for a band releasing appealing music thats been on the charts for decades now. Even if your not the biggest fan of their style of music or sound. The fact they survived and were able to produce music of substance for that amount of time. Is definatley worthy of mention in my opinion.

Queen, I think is pretty well respected, at least before Paul Rodgers.

What does that have to do with the reasons I stated? Thats a whole different topic all together that lands somewhere under morally ****ed up. Supposedly Kobe Bryants a ****in rapist, but what the hell does that have to do with the 5 championship rings he has? Nothing not a damn thing.... Jimi Hendrix used to beat up his girlfriends on countless numbers of occasions, and that affects what he did musicly none. I interpreted the thread as who we respect from a musical standpoint....not a moral one... I didnt know anything of what you posted, but it doesnt change my opinion of his accomplishments either.
I guess if Micheal Vick wins the super bowl he's not a great player because he killed dogs. Off the field antics and personal moral issues dont sway my perception of recognizing talent. Doesnt mean I want to hang out and drink beer with them...just recognition for what they accel at.

Picking up on some of the guys already mentioned, the musicians I most respect are the ones that have shown a long-term commitment to producing original, heart-felt, innovative music. Extra points ( * ) to those who kept on doing it without much public acclaim :

Dylan, John Fahey*, Iggy Pop*, Miles Davis, Sun Ra*, Van Morrison, Dikkey Betts, Franco, Cesaria Evora*, Mike Rattledge ...

Actually, once you start, the list goes on forever - and should probably include Beethoven too.
