albums with fancy/unsual packaging

a mate of mine with more cash than me has alot of deluxe/fancy album editons and readily admits he buys alot of them for the packaging alone. Most are in elaborately decorated boxes and are crazy money but do look good admittedly. Anyone else buy music this way? please say no to make him feel weird.

no because not only is that stupid but what if the band sucks and you don't like them. If you're buying them due to the cover why not just make covers for the cd yourself. Because that's the only importance the packaging has in my opinion.

some albums have had some awesome packaging that I got over the past few years.

my favorite was probably Emery's "The Question" the CD fold out was an old school envelope that was waxed shut.

I've never bought an album just because of fancy over-elaborate packaging. I do have some albums that are completely over the top when it comes to the packaging such as Tool's 10,000 Days, I still can't tell whether it's a stroke of awesomeness or just plain overkill.

I have quite a few Deluxe Edition albums that are really cool to look at and they always come with a bonus CD or DVD and a nice booklet to read through. They're a nice way to release a CD but they can be over-priced.

If it's an album or box set by someone I like and it has decent exclusives or extras then I am willing pay a few extra quid for it but I certainly don't buy something for the sake of it. I usually reserve that for DVD's!

Some of the current crop of slipcased Deluxe editions are very hit and miss. Jeff Buckley's Grace is a decent 2 disc set with an extra DVD too but then you have Black Sabbath's Paranoid in the same series with an extras disc with the album in 5.1 for home cinema. The album was only recorded in 4 track ffs so that is completely pointless having to find an extra audio channel that wasn't even there in the first place!

A friend did pay £70 for the deluxe edition of Porcupine Tree's The Incident because it came in a hardback book style case with the short story based around the album and I told him he was nuts. He agreed and admitted he was drunk when he ordered it!

The most I have paid for a set is £20 for Joy Division's Heart and Soul box set which was definitely worth it and the most for a DVD was £32 for the American 4 disc version of the original Dawn of the Dead movie as it's has never been released over here in that configuration.

I guess though if you are a collector and love the album or film and money is no object who are we to pass judgement?

I don't own this myself, but this is some neat packaging.

I remember one of my friends older brothers had a rolling stones album (sticky fingers) that had a pair of jeans on the front, with an actual zipper! it was very cool!

love this band, but the packaging was what convinced me to buy it and not just download it.

I've got the Phish Joy boxset, and it's pricey and elaborate; it has drawers that pull out with posters depicting each of the songs on the album, extra discs, and an amazing...well, booklet almost isn't the right word for it, because it's pretty book sized. Also got the vinyl with it.

I have Queen's Crown Jewels as well, the velvet covered, hinged box with the CDs in imitation, miniature vinyl sleeves, + the nude "Bicycle Race" poster.

In other words, yes, I do, but only if it's a band I love dearly.

A stroke of awesomeness! But I refuse to pay nearly 30 dollars for such an old album. Still waiting for a cheap one :D

I love exceptional covers. Will make a video about that in this topic.
I won't pay extra for them, but I love having them.
