PLaying live music gave me a lot of confidence and broke me out of the shell of being the shy kid I was. It made me realize that I was actually able to do something creative and cool. Playing in a band too also allowed me to channel a lot of bad experiences and feelings into something a little more positive (I was for a time the main lyricist in some of my bands). It essentially gave me a useful pressure release valve. Most of all, being in a band and playing bass allowed me to be the person I wanted to be. I've always felt that most of my life all the people around me have been pulling my strings, channeling me into doing things I didn't want to do, pressurizing me. Being in a band allowed me to finally be the person I'd always wanted to be, without ANYONE barring my bandmates putting any sort of obligations on me.
