Kind/Mean Musicians
 

This is a reoccurring thought that won't leave me alone. Some of you might have have wondered about this, so why not start a discussion on it?

So, which musician(s) would be nice to you and which musician(s) wouldn't?

Nice/Friendly: Ringo Starr, John Cage, John Paul Jones, Mo Tucker, Jack White

Mean/Rude: Biggie Smalls, Lou Reed, Jimmy Page, Kanye West, Karlheinz Stockhausen

What about you guys?

Most musicians, I'd probably make a point to be mean, and rude first. I'm not sure, otherwise. Albeit, I agree John Cage would probably be nice but I don't imagine that guy having a mean bone in his body.

Kind: Ben Weinman(talked to him on FB a few times, seems like a cool guy), Wayne Coyne, that guy from Wingnut Dishwasher's Union

Mean: Win Butler, Billy Corgan, Tyler the Creator, Kanye West, Thom Yorke

not really. Biggie seemed like a pretty chill guy around the right people.

I bet Maynard James Keenan would be in everyone's mean category. That guy is a complete wanker. I mean, he's a good singer, and a creative guy. I just think he's a pretensions annoying self indulgent ****sucker.

Well I know Joe Strummer's dead but I think he would have been the nicest guy to meet.

I'm kind of surprised with Win Butler being put in the mean category. He seems like he would be a really nice guy to me.

I agree with you on Thom Yorke. I've watched some interviews with him and he can be pretty rude sometimes. Although, it's usually because the interviewer is asking stupid questions or questions he's been asked a million times. If he's being asked original questions specficially about his music rather than personal life, he seems a lot nicer.

Nice: Lady Gaga (she's weird but probably pretty nice to everybody atleast at first), Sam Beam (Iron & Wine), Ed Droste (i imagine him being pretty chill), Sierra Casady (of CocoRosie, watch her in one of the music videos she don't have a mean bone in her body)

Rude: Damon albarn (Blur/Gorillaz) (just gives off that vibe), Patrick & Eugene (the percussionist guy is actually very rude and snobby), Bianca Casady (The non-opera voice from CocoRosie, i'm not sure why but i think at first she's probably mean to everybody but once you get to know her she's probably nice)

I've always thought that every famous musician will have at least a bit of assholiness about them, no matter what their personality may seem like.

Oh... I forgot to mention him. He really does seem like a nice guy to meet (not to mention he's probably very strange which makes it even better).

I'd say Liam and Noel Gallagher are pretty mean. Well, they're certainly obnoxious.

Axl Rose strikes me as a really nice guy.

Yeah i agree pat the bunny (from wingnut) seems really nice. What's your basis of tyler the creator being mean? just curious.

I've e-mailed and talked to Spoonboy a few times and he seems really nice.

Krist Novelselic seems nice, Jeff Rossenstock, Beck. I could see Steve Albini being a really nice guy.
Whoever has seen the pixie's documentary knows Kim Deal is nice.

I don't know, he's said a lot of stuff that's just come off as really rude and arrogant.

He can be really nice if he's in the right mood and people are having a good time, but if he's pissed, he will tear you up.

I actually don't think he would be.

Dave Grohl seems like pretty chill guy. On the flip side, Gord Downie was kind of rude when I met him at a festival one year. Might've been tired or something, I'm not quite sure.

I duno, it can be tough to judge.. I'm sure around there inner-group the majority of people are liked.. Some people just deal with others better, and some don't care as much... The way it is.

Based on his interviews(not the best thing to judge someone's personality with, but it's all I can really use), he seems like the type of guy that thinks he's a lot smarter than everyone else, even though he's really not. In his interviews he never takes the questions seriously and comes off as really disrespectful to the interviewer. He's pretty funny sometimes though, I'll give him that.

If anyone follows him on Twitter, you'll know that his tweets are generally far from pleasant.

I don't think Tyler, The Creator comes across as an ******* but I can understand why he'd rub people the wrong way. It just seems that he doesn't take anything seriously. I actually find him to be really funny though.

First people I thought of for being mean was the Gallaghers. They just seem like completely self-absorbed pricks.

First person I thought of for being nice was Marc Bolan. He seemed really nice in interviews.

Noel is a spiteful piece of trash whose lips I wish I could sew shut.

Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip? I met him a couple of years ago in Kingston, ON (where he is from), and he was really nice.

i think he'd be a cool enough dude when people aren't all up in his sh*t, he's stated before that he hates parties and being the center of attention.


as for nice musicians, the guys from Clutch seem really cool in a couple of your uncles sort of way(i'm not in my 40s or have a family like they do so that's how they strike me), as well as Mike G and Left Brain from OFWGKTA.

for mean, Kanye West obviously(although i still love his music), Mike Patton and instead of TtC, Jasper from OFWGKTA seems like he'd be an assh*le

Kamui, Uppermost, and Arms & Sleepers are all unbelievably nice. I've talked to both guys from Kamui, and Dom even IDed a song for me that not even he was familiar with. Uppermost has posted songs I showed him on his Facebook a couple times, and Arms & Sleepers are insanely kind and gracious. I ordered a poster from them (as in just ONE), and they sent me one of every poster they had! For $2.00! I'm not familiar with any "mean" musicians.

Deadmau5 is an arrogant bastard. Only one I can think of really.

Justin Broadrick (Jesu, Godflesh) seems like a really nice, down to earth guy from interviews I've read.

Michael Gira has always seemed like kind of a cock to me, though when I saw Swans a couple months ago he seemed fairly friendly.

Yeah, I'm sure he's a nice guy, I just met him at the wrong time probably. It was at the folk festival, and I'm pretty sure he was heading to one of the stages to do a show. He's a funny guy, though.

I meant to post this, he's so normal considering the ****ed up music he makes!

Dave Grohl would be an absolute gent.

Andrew Bird and Rivers Cuomo and the members of Animal Collective seem like genuinely nice guys who would talk about music with anyone who wanted to talk.

Conor Oberst and Thom Yorke seem really full of themselves.

Really? My perception has always been that he's an ass, but maybe he's mellowed with age or something.

Ben Folds, Julia Nunes, Dave Wyndorf, Trey Anastasio, Mike Gordon, Ingrid Michaelson = all super nice. Also, the guys in The Turtles.

Micky Dolenz (The Monkees) is kind of a dick.

I'm sure Conor is full of himself but i think he's still nice.
