The popularity of a band doesn't make me like them any more or less than if they would be unpopular. I might be inclined to check them out faster if they are popular but it still doesn't change my opinion musically about the band.

It doesn't for me because I don't listen to radio pretty much ever. The only time I could see myself hating a band from popularity is if they became ridiculously popular like Katy Perry or Lady Gaga and they were the only musicians kids at school talked about. Otherwise, popularity doesn't really matter to me.

Not mine, but I have friends who will absolutely not listen to anything considered "popular" or "mainstream" after 1989 (in most cases).
Of course one of them loves the Fray, which I told him is as about as mainstream as you can get...plus it's a poor man's version of Coldplay. Then he responded he hated Coldplay. |
