No, he was being completely serious. Do you not know anything about Cat Stevens?

Google Yusuf Islam.

Am I being racist when I say "What an utter idiot devoting his life to that"?

Nope. A religion isn't a race.

Yes, I've been listening to Cat Stevens for a while. I can definitely see him saying that jokingly or sarcastically. You, on the other hand, seem to dislike him, so maybe your bias leads you to thinking that? Maybe my liking him gives me a bias as well? Personally, I don't think either of us can say anything with 100% certainty unless there's a video or audio of him saying that particular quote.

Huh? What makes you think I dislike him? I just think it's a dumb comment. It's in the context of him explaining his conversion to islam so I doubt it's intended sarcastically.

Really, Cat? Really? You had never heard of gospel music before? You must have led an amazingly sheltered life.
Your use of words makes me think otherwise. Although, I might be mistaken, I'll admit. Also, I can still see him say that jokingly or sarcastically - even on the subject of Islam. Like I previously said, if you can find an audio or video of him saying these words, then neither of us can say anything with 100% certainty.

People's opinion about other people can often be reflected by their word choice. You seem to portray a negative attitude towards Cat Stevens. Albeit, I may have misinterpreted your view on Stevens himself. Considering you're talking about what you find to be a dumb comment, you are probably just using that negativity towards Cat Steven's action and not him personally.

Wow, talk about over analyzing. The words I used are the words from the title of the thread.

At any rate, a grown adult saying they had never heard of "music for god" is a dumb comment no matter how you slice it.
