Maybe it was due to the timing, but this classic ballad had a version by Martyn Bates that caught my ears back in '87. True, Dusty Springfield has THE version that I heard a decade after listening to this, but you know how it goes when some 80's "angsty" Late Teen already familiar with Eyeless in Gaza hears something on late night radio knowing nobody in your immediate area will ever hear of it (in this case CBC's Brave New Waves) and just connects with it (plus, separating from a relationship also helps, but that's another story for another time).

Two variations of the Archies/Don Kirshner super hit...
First the soulful version from the Wicked Pickett - Then the killer sarcastic "heavy" bulldozing that can only be done by Alex Chilton - Not too into the Germs' version which was better caught seen back in the day but I'm sure there are it's fans. |
