Mini-Review The Album Above You

I told James to make it, because it's basically ripping off his idea.
But he told me to make it, so I did.
I thought it would be better than just songs, because lets face it - almost everyone here prefers listening to their music in album form. You may discover new albums if the idea takes off.

Anyway, to start... a nice easy one, just think of as many adjectives for 'amazing' as you can.

You didn't think of as many adjectives for 'amazing' as I'd have liked :(

Jailbreak is my fav Thin Lizzy album as it has a good balance between heavy rawk goodness and catchy tunes. But Bad reputation is a close 2nd of the 3 I have. It's a lot heavier than Jailbreak and harder to get into but I like it a lot. 4/5

Yep. You both don't think ITAOTS is the crown crusted beautiful thing I do.

Anyway...

Outkast's Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, it has its moments, it's not one I've heard a lot and I would have preferred someone else to mini-review it. This is a good thread idea, more people should join in FFS.

But yeah, it had some good beats. Though, it was a bit... funk-like for my liking.
Worst review ever
3/5, probably a bit unfair as I haven't listened to it a lot though.

So, when I decide to start giving hip-hop a shot this should be one of the first I listen to? ;)

My favorite album of theirs. It's still held back by some atrocious tracks ("Guernica", "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows"), but it's admirable, if only for the moments where the sheer aesthetic beauty makes you forget about how generic it can be. No higher than a 2.5 or 3.0, but I have quite a long connection with the album so I give it 3.5 out of amiability.

Can - Future Days

gunnels 10-11-2010 06:44 PM

My personal favorite Can album. Nothing else even comes close imo. Although Damo's vocals aren't as schizophrenic as I like, they flow very well with the album. Great to chill to, and oddly tranquil whilst funky. Bel Air is one hell of a jam.

Also it was proof that Yo La Tengo were no joke. They were sort of an 'old' band even when this came out and they still made better music than their peers and followers. Hell, they still do. I'm going to listen to this album tonight. It's that good.

i think this is where Blonde Redhead kind of found their "sound"....stepping away from the sonic youth fuzzy noise influence of their first few albums.....and creating beautiful surreal soundscapes...although there are some really weird fuzzed out interludes....the majority of this album very warm and relaxing....this is one my favorites by a band that has yet to really let me down

Things We Lost in The Fire was my first Slowcore album and it still holds a special place in my heart. I don't find it quite as sad as We Could Live In Hope but it's a great album for sure.
Highlights: Sunflower, Whore.

Amazing guitars as you'd expect from Television. I mean you can literally hear R.E.M. cutting away their musical umbilical cord on 'Glory'. And thats just the jangly bits. The songs themselves are not as strong as Marque Moon, with some underwhelming choruses. Tom Verlaine was by now now a truly accomplished musician, looking to play in good taste. As a result, the child like thrill of learning as you go along, and the punk 'friction' of their previous record is lost. Still, a decent enough record just not as striking as their debut. Cos I'm a spaz, this was my first time hearing Adventure, so merry times were had.

Menomena - Friend and Foe

dankrsta 12-07-2010 01:54 PM

^OK, let's see...This is the first time I've listened to Menomena. I didn't really know anything about this band that is apparently very promising, or so they say. What I'm about to say is based on two listens and while my opinion might change, at the same time this album doesn't give me much motivation to listen to it more. Overall it's a solid indie pop album with some interesting electronic arrangements and occasionally off-beat rhythm section. The first two tracks 'Muscle 'N Flow' and 'The Pelican' are my favorites, especially the latter, incidentally or not, the 'rockiest' song on the album. I leave the possibility that Friend and Foe may be a slow burner and it has some interesting songs that I might enjoy more outside the album actually. As a whole it didn't grab me and I struggled to reach the end.

Such a raw fun rock & roll record, really great to listen to with a really great production.
Their debut album is definitely their defining work and one of the finest Proto-Punk albums you'll listen to. 4.5/5

Sorry to put it bluntly like this, but that just sounded awful. The vocals grated like nails on a chalkboard, all that synth-heavy backdrop was just so gimmicky and...yeuch.

Then again, I'm not a fan of any of the connected artists, so go figure.

Here, someone listen to this;

Listen to some snippets of it here, and check out one of my favourite songs from it here.
