Mini-Review The Song Above You

So, somebody posts a youtube link of a song they've been listening to recently and the person below them writes a short paragraph of their thoughts along with a rating. They then post a youtube link to another song and the person below them writes their thoughts etc.
Saw this on another forum I was lurking on today and thought it could be good fun, hope it takes off. It can also help introduce you to new music.

So mine.

I dig it. I've never listened to the Sonics but they sound like a band I'd dig. Not only does the singer have a great voice but I particularly like that little guitar solo at about 1:40.

Here's one I've been a fan of since last year but I've found myself revisiting a lot recently...

Electric Wizard—"The Chosen Few" (2007)

Unfortunately it looks like embedding this isn't working so you'll have to click here to listen to it.

^8/10. It has quite the atmosphere. I love how the guitar completely overshadows the vocals, and makes it sound absolutely huge. I'll be checking it out :).

Really nice IDM right here. Made me want to dance(roll) epileptically all over the room. Haven't heard about this band before but this made me want to check them out.

embedding doesn't seem to work

OctaneHugo 10-10-2010 03:21 PM

Not bad. Kind of boring that all it did for 3 1/2 minutes was the same guitar notes and some drumming, not as jazzy as I thought it'd be and that was disappointing.

YouTube - Whitehouse - Ruthless Babysitting

Charlemagne 10-10-2010 04:01 PM

I couldn't get through it. The beat was too repetitive and seemed to have absolutely no form whatsoever, it was just very random. The vocals also irritated me, too grating and loud. 2/10

loveissucide 10-10-2010 04:18 PM

OK, nothing overly memorable about it in the indie-rock world, although the vocals were decent enough

James 10-10-2010 04:29 PM

The only Steely Dan song I know, i've always wanted to investigate the band more and I may just do that tonight as this song impressed me. I love his vocals he has a perfect voice for the accompianing music.

I especially like it in its place on the album as things only get weirder from therein if you ask me...

I've certainly been listening to my fair share of Tim Buckley as of late, although I've predominately been focusing on the Goodbye and Hello album. This is likewise delightful. His more "psych-folk" compositions are what tend to draw my interest, and his voice along with the instrumentation on the track make this a really wonderful listening experience. Unlike many of my peers, I prefer Tim Buckley's music to his son's.

Dude, that song is amazing, can you send a link to that album for me please? I'm having trouble finding it :(

This is like a revamped, better Song Wars! :)

I really liked it. The bass line was really fun. The song made me quite happy. The band name is quite obscure though :D 8/10

Solid, choice chaotic metal. The slow section was also sick. Awesome to headbang to. 8.5/10. Maybe even 9/10

I'm gonna go and fire one of my favorite songs under five minutes into the open.

Telephasic 10-11-2010 01:38 PM

Wow, not my thing at all. I just can't enjoy this sort of music, I hate the vocals and the guitarwork. I don't think it's my dog's thing either, he walked off as soon as the song started. 4/10

dankrsta 10-11-2010 01:51 PM

^Hmmm...this is one of those songs that I'm usually totally indifferent to. But on some rare occasion it can suddenly hit me and I would love it. But, this is not one of those occasions.

Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 - 2x4s

Jakkc 10-11-2010 02:20 PM

Really didn't like that sorry. Not really a fan of experimental music thats not completely synth based! And I really tend to appreciate music that is well arranged. Have to give that a 4/10.

YouTube - Stevie Wonder - My Eyes Don't Cry

Thats my bit, simply cause right now im reminiscing on seeing Stevie at Glastonbury :D

Unknown Soldier 10-11-2010 05:45 PM

Its not one of my favourite Stevie Wonder songs and I probably wouldn`t listen to it again in a hurry. 5/10 (At first it sounded like an upbeat Steely Dan song)

YouTube - Atomic Rooster - Winter

Atomic Rooster are kind of a long forgotten prog rock band from the early 70`s, despite being prog were actually very easy to listen to as well. They played some blistering rock solos (especially on drums)

bob. 10-11-2010 07:13 PM

that is really mellow...much more than i was thinking it may be....but still fluid and somewhat of a joy to listen to....they could drop the flute solos...or maybe not

Cosmic Psychos - Can't Come In

this is exactly what all those (grunge?) bands in 90's wish they could be.....and the best band to come from Melbourne

Hmm... 7/10. I could see what the music was. Can't say it was the best of it's kind

Queen Boo 10-11-2010 07:46 PM

Yeah, sorry Bullet, I didn't like that at all....4/10.....

Given that Engine has forgotten to post a song for review here`s another.

YouTube - ToTo - Angela (Sub . Español)

Its from the classic Toto debut album 1978 and was the final track on the album.

Meh. It's no "Africa" that's for sure. Sorry but I give it a 2/10.

Here's mine: Cage—"Lord Have Mercy"

i've always liked cage he has very dark rap. my favorite song from him is "Never Knew You"

i'll give this 6.34564219750137/10

Telephasic 10-12-2010 06:16 AM

Awesome song, such an original sound. I really like how DP mix all these different genres and manage to make it sound coherent. 8/10

Charlemagne 10-12-2010 08:27 AM

Really awesome sound right there. I liked that two members could still managed to make a song sound so loud and complete. The Wolf Parade style vocals are also a very nice plus.

I can't find the original Rosa version which I like a lot more, but this one will do just fine.

Unknown Soldier 10-12-2010 01:21 PM

Quite a good song and started off sounding like Weezer, a sound I like a lot. Downside, was that I was waiting for something to happen in the song, that something never happened 6/10

You beat me to the Residents song and agree its a killer track. I didn`t know too much about Yo La Tengo but really liked the song 7/10 could be higher on further listens.

One of the tracks from "Forever Changes" one of the greatest albums recorded in the 60`s, sadly I couldn`t find a better sound quality.

Forever Changes is one of my favourite sixties albums and this is certainly one of the best tracks on it. The guitar on it is just beautiful and it enchants me everytime I listen to the album.
