This song starts so well, with the sombre pace matching the lyrics about an empty cafe. Also, the line about the oyster and the shell is particularly clever. However, apart from the little piano interlude at about 3 mins in, I didn`t like the smaltzy sound of the arrangements and I found, as so often with Ferry, that his performance sounds contrived. He seems to be mainly focused on projecting some sophisticated image of himself. Why else sing in French ? And the references to Paris are pretty clumsy too; rather as if you or I had an affair in London and the only places we could mention were St. Paul`s and The Thames. Instead of adding some genuine Parisian colour, Ferry makes it sound like he never got off the tourist bus.
