I liked the music arrangement, the bass in particular but the tone of the vocals sounded a bit too generic for my taste. 5/10

bob_32_116 04-15-2016 10:12 AM

^^ Deerhoof started out sounding as though it might be intriguing. The vocals, though, or rather the voice, which I admit I could acquire a taste for much as I have got like Kate Bush, seems totally mismatched for this kind of song; it needs a punchier vocal, and probably a male vocal. I do have to give the song points for some interesting arrangements and chord progressions. 6/10.

And now for something completely different...

Frownland 04-15-2016 02:10 PM

Those are some cheesy ass synths. The downtempo vocals are the best part of the song, sort of reminiscent of MBV. Overall though, the music is just kind of...meh. Probably not a bad song for people who are into that kind of thing though, which I am admittedly not. It's just too...cheery I want to say? 2/10

You better be happy I'm the one reviewing this track. Pretty good, compelling songwriting. A bit of a terrible performance, I'm sure with just a bit of extra effort, the song could really flourish, but whatever, I understand the feel Dawson is going for. 6/10

Here's a well-known band, less well-known song:

I was prepared for a worse review than that, don't worry. I heard Dawson's music described as played with a drunkard's confidence, and I think that's pretty fitting.

Pretty cool build up and I dug the electronic stuff going on at the end. Never been a huge fan of Yorke's vocals, though. 7/10

Aux-In 04-16-2016 05:18 PM

A repetitive farting noise that repeats throughout, mixed with random noises. It tries to go hard @ about 1:45 and build into something else, but I didn't end up buying it. The sax was the only interesting thing about it, and that gave it an extra 1/2 point, so 3.5/10.

Black Francis 04-16-2016 05:52 PM

It had a good built up in the intro but then the beat dropped to that dubstep sh*t where they just crammed as many effects as possible, at one point it had like an underwater effect for like 5 seconds for no *****n reason! there's an overlaying synth i like though, it's at the intro and it sounds like an 8 bit synth from a nintendo game. it comes back later in the song and that's about the only thing i liked from the song. 4/10

TechnicLePanther 04-17-2016 07:11 AM

Minutemen strike again. Pretty much your basic Minutemen song, a bit of funk here,a bit of punk there. It all adds up to a sweet, but curt, whole. 7/10

PBS bumper music. 5/10 Sorry if that sounded a kinda harsh. :(

The Flying Burrito Brothers - Hot Burrito #1

TechnicLePanther 04-18-2016 05:45 PM

Wouldn't expect it from the song title, but it's actually a quality song. The lip-syncing is terrible. Almost seems like a parody song. But really everything holds up in this one. Apparently it was made by the same Gram Parsons of the Byrds, so that's cool. Really nothing to complain about here. Just a simple love song, but everything about it works perfectly. In fact, I'm already re-listening to it. At first, Parson's vocals were kind of grating, but their slightly off tune nature has an odd pull to it. Alright, 10/10, I really liked this one.

The description brings back memories.

Goofle 04-19-2016 07:36 AM

Would make for nice background music a TV Show or a Film, but not something I want to listen to as a stand alone piece. Just... nothing to it at all. 2/10

The glitchy stuff combined with the decent beat was promising at first, but it just never went anywhere. Maybe I just haven't listened to enough ****ty dubstep or eurotrash techno to get sick of that kind of stuff, but I was just waiting for the song to go buck wild, and it was pretty much the same thing for the whole song. Not bad as background music, though. 5/10

I don't know if that song was a hit in the Top 40 but it's definitely in the 80s Pop vein, drums are up front, a lot of synths, can't tell if it is a sequencer or bass, (not crazy about the guitars), over-emotive growly vocals. 6/10

6/10 S'a'ight. I've listened to a bit of Cavalera Conspiracy, and while they're the next best thing to Chaos A.D.-era Sepultura, they're still a substitute rather than anything that stands on its own. I definitely dig some of what I've heard though, but this song was kinda dull.

TechnicLePanther 05-04-2016 01:19 PM

Another metal song for retards. Meh, a decent hook, a bit of a riff, let's go with a 6/10.

With a band name like "Merauder" and a song title like "Master Killer", I think this is a statement to be assumed rather than made explicit. Philistine. And you forgot to post your own video.

There's a problem when your music video is considerably more entertaining than your boring song. And that because of... NOT THE BEES!!! 4/10

Frownland 05-04-2016 02:30 PM

The instrumentation on there is pretty good, but I'm not a huge fan of the vocalist. It gets a little easier to sit through as the track goes on though. 7.5/10

Just jumping in here for a second, the track D.E.A.D.R.A.M.O.N.E.S was one of my first experiences with the genre, and because of that Modern Life Is War will always hold a special spot in my heart.

You're doing it right, though I prefer MLIW's more atmospheric tracks. They do both styles well, but the uniqueness of their more laidback songs just makes them seem more unique.

Witness is the only album of their's that I'm familiar with, and it's been a few years since I've listened to it last. I think it might be time that I go back and check some more of their stuff out though.

You really should. I'm honestly confused why every site that categorizes them calls them a hardcore band, when they seem so clearly a post-hardcore band. I mean, they play a form of hardcore so evolved that to not call them post-hardcore would seem to demean the concept of post-hardcore itself, even while elevating basic hardcore.

Heavy and sludgy in a good way, although a little on the slow side for me, generally. However, the production seems solid and cohesive, even if the vocals aren't that compelling. 6/10.

It's all I can seem to find on my own when it comes to rock, bruv. Have no choice but to "settle."

I'm sorry about that.

That was pretty sick. The intro had a nice TG/SPK feel to it. Once it took off I thought it was all cool but thought the drums were lacking until the breakdown at 1:15ish. 8/10

Don't be scared by Merzbow, it's probably not what you think.

I actually liked the build at first, so at that point I wasn't scurred. I felt like the high-pitched sound could've been toned down a bit as it takes over the entire track/distracts you from the other elements. Finally at 3:50 the tone changes, abrasively, though. Somewhere after that is some sort of effect that is almost like light turntable "wickie wickies," but it's probably some other instrument. Perhaps it could be a lullaby for crazy people, but it wasn't as bad as it's legendarily known to be. Quite like some of the super-random dubstep noise music that I come across on the occasion. 5/10.

Two Spirit 06-10-2016 07:36 AM

Hip Hop isn't really my thing, but that has a nice beat. 90's rap has a big edge over the stuff released now.

Seemed like one big over produced commercial. 4 minutes of credits? wtf

7/10 Would be a 9/10 if I was wasted on a patio at a beachside bar.

I had no idea about him until about a month ago.

Aksak is always 10/10, but I'll let someone else rate it because I don't want to dig up a song again.

Black Francis 06-10-2016 11:34 PM

Aksak 7/10

I liked it, it had a nice groove.

Never heard of that band. Sort of liked it instrumentally and in terms of composition. Nice vibe to it. The singer was sort of terrible, though. Reminded me of the first singer in Faith No More. Out of tune, moany, sounds dumb. I don't know, just a question of personal preference! Despite the singer, I feel like I could listen to more from this band.
6/10

Anyway, here's my pick:
