Best time for them to go IMO.

They were clearly on a downward trend, they saw that and didn't think there was much more mileage in the project and called it a day.

Shame more bands as successful as them don't do that.

It was simply stating my opinion that I felt Elephant wasn't that good of an album, and that the White Stripes breaking up wasn't heartbreaking because they are years since starting to run low on gas. How this would get a rise out of anybody, I don't know. It's obvious that I wasn't trying to bash Jack White to get a reaction, as I supply both compliments, and criticisms.

Elephant just feels flat, and generic. Maybe that's why it was such a breakout but it never felt very lively. White Blood Cells was very clever in the way it was put together, and recorded. It had a very different vibe. Elephant was just generic bluesy rock, and not particularly good generic bluesy rock. Seven Nation Army is a decent song, but once you realize it's basically the same riff for 20 minutes, albeit it's a good riff, it loses it's appeal.
Big3 is a fanboy. He refuses to accept the obvious

I know that on music sites, the line between Hipster and Troll is thinner than a 13 year-olds mustache but you've got some major balls taking offense to being called a Troll and making a statement like the one I've bolded.

Call me what you will, but you've said the first album was "gold." Not even this fanboi will go that far.

I'm not a hipster either. I'm not sure why you've taken such offense to my posts. Elephant is an uninteresting album. I don't hate it because it's popular. I hate it because it's boring. If that was the case, I'd hate the White Stripes as a whole.

If anything, you're being the troll. There's no reason to rip into somebody for disliking an album you like.

Yeah, the thing is, thats not what I did. You said "this album is boring and generic, I guess thats why its a big seller." You said that when I asked why you didn't like Elephant. Its fine to have that opinion, but if you can't see how that doesn't sound like a giant troll line, I don't know what I can do for you.

Eh, there's nothing wrong with being realistically jaded. White Stripes broke out with one album which was very lofi, and came together nicely by it's very intentional lack of clarity. The next album they have a massive hit, and focus on putting out something a little more clear, and digestible helped them capture what they didn't with the last.

Albeit, their sound was always focused on being catchy and direct, one could still argue that a large portion of that album's success comes from Jack White watering it down a tad, and presenting it with more clarity. Not saying it was even intentional, just saying. It bothers me because the album feels it has culled away alot of the free spirited traits of the albums before it, and feels kind of heartless in comparison.

Doesn't sound like a troll comment to me. I see people attack the Velvet Underground (my favorite band) all the time, and do I think they're trolling? Not really. Hell, Skaliojurah actually complemented them. Trolls don't do that. By the way, Skaliojurah is NOT a troll, and anyone who has spoken to him knows that.

Needless to say though, I disagree with him about Elephant being a boring album. I think it was decent and had great guitar work. I love every some on it.

I am sad with De Stijl's position in this poll.
