But I just hate it when so many people use it as a criteria. "This band sucks because they have no feeling, this band is amazing because they have so much feeling, etc", to me it's just a useless word with no real meaning or significance, its just something people like to use to defend their questionable points of view.
Not to say a musician can't pour their emotion into the music, but whats the criteria for feeling? How do you rate it and measure it accurately? How do you judge and decide what is "true" feeling and what is just pretentious bibble babble? How do sense it? How can you be even remotely objective about it? Be truthful, you can't say you know which bands use "real" emotion and which ones don't, you can't read their minds, you can't see into their hearts. Hell, maybe I was wrong before, maybe Dream Theater DO put more emotion into their music than The Ramones. Who's to say? Last edited by boo boo; 03-28-2007 at 05:04 AM. |

I didn't think much of their last one, but I'll be getting this one and hoping for the best. They're a great band.

While I completely disagree with your point here Boo Boo, this phrase you've used here is amazing. I mean, someones point of view can be questionable? Not even Reagan could cook up this kind of brilliance.
To challenge, You can absolutely tell when someone has experienced something their singing about, and you know full well when they have not. If you can't tell, I'd chalk it up to an inexperienced ear, or perhaps some just have a predilection toward distinguishing one from the other. I myself have no issue deciphering when someone is remembering how they felt when they sing about an issue that has effected them deeply, and when their trying to sing a song note-perfect. Its like speech writing, some people want to convey a message, some people just want to get to the podium and back to their seat without stumbling over their words or the rug.

I can tell the difference between someone who has gone out & experienced life and someone who has spent all his time sitting in his bedroom practicing how fast he can play the guitar & reading too much Tolkien.

Its enforcing these kinda pointless limitations that makes me dislike so much of todays music. Bands don't have to all sing about the same thing, "sing about your life experiences, or else". I view music as escapism, you're creating your own sonic environment, your own fantasy universe if you will, to hell with applying other peoples logic I say. If you want to sing about your life experience, fine, you want to sing about fairies and dragons, thats also fine. You can also be emotional singing about fairies and dragons, Frank Black gets emotional singing about Monkeys, why not? |
