The Toasty 50
The Toasty 50 Hello, Fellow music banter-ers! I'm fairly new around here, and not many of you guys know me very well. In order for you guys to get to know me better, I've decided to compile a "top 50 albums" list. Just in case you guys didn't know, I call myself Toasty, why? Well, in grade two, I burnt my arm on a toaster, and I came to school and everybody started calling me toasty once they found out where the the burn on my arm came from. Now, the origin of my name aside, lets talk albums: #50: Animal Collective: Merriweather Post Pavilion http://www.mtv.com/shared/promoimage...lion/cover.jpg I bet you saw this coming. I usually don't like those REALLY popular hipster bands (Neutral Milk Hotel, for a good example.) but this album is really top notch. Every time you listen to it, you always hear a quirky sample you never heard before. Every song on here is a solid track, from In The Flowers to Brother Sport. And isn't the album art the best? the image above is moving, And it's a JPEG. I also love the singing on this album, It really stands out on tracks like Guys Eyes and Taste. The only problem I have about this album is the repetition, but that doesn't really effect how much I love this album. #49: Autechre: Tri Repetae http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/image...0d25f110.L.gif ^Most imaginative album art ever. The amazing trippy album art aside, the music is pretty top notch. Autechre has a really cool style on this album. They take a really stripped down, minimal beat, and loop it, then a few seconds later, a new sound is added. this process of adding on goes on for a few minutes, and it sounds nothing like the beginning of the song. in fact, the music evolves, and it does so nicely. My personal favorite tracks were Stud and Eutow. If you want to start getting into IDM, this is a good place to start. a brilliant album, in my opinion. |

Nah jk, but this is a pretty bold thing for a newbie to do. I'm still finishing my 1000. I'll be keeping an eye on this. |

I'll be checking this for hopefully some crazy IDM I haven't heard of. |
James is a freak. He knows everything about music, I'm not even surprised he's doing a top 1000.

I actually personally don't like either album posted so far, but I'm interested in seeing more. And good job on taking the time to do this! I was wanting to make a top 100 myself sometime, but college starts soon so I need to see if I'll have time during the year to keep up with the list. I don't want to start and then abandon it.
Anyway, I'll be watching this topic for updates. |
No worries, I've got some good electronica up my sleeve for you guys. such as this one: #48: Kona Triangle: Sing A New Sapling Into Existence http://electropeople.org/uploads/pos...-existence.jpg To tell you the truth, I haven't even heard of Lone until My friend recommended this to me. Apparently Lone is a part of Kona Triangle, and I probably will check Lone out when my internet decides to be faster. Whoops, I got off topic, I will go back to talking about this, now. okay. this is an electronic/IDM-ish/something album, that has a few odd time signatures, old-school-ish synth and a great overall feel. It reminds me of Selected Ambient Works 85-92 era Aphex Twin. The album also has a distinctly tropical feel, as heard on Airlock and Mango Rubicon. This is a good album for fans of Flying Lotus and (from what I've heard among the electronic community) Lone. #47: Maserati: Inventions For The New Season http://img11.nnm.ru/3/b/d/1/6/3bd16e...e4eb8_full.jpg I would probably like U2 if it weren't for Bono. His vocals get on my nerves. I don't know why, though. What if we removed the vocals altogether? you would get Maserati, the instrumental U2. Whatever you do, don't listen to the Pitchfork review of this album. This is a great post-rock album, with some pretty solid tracks. They even wander into Ambient territory with the intro to the second song 12 16, and they pulled it off so nicely. I was recommended this back when I first started listening to post-rock. I must say, even after two years, this album still held up well and withheld the test of time. My favorite track on this album is The World Outside. it begins with an interesting guitar loop and builds up throughout the song. Fascinating listen, I must say. |
i'll do some more tomorrow. I need to get some sleep.

#46: GY!BE: Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven http://www.411mania.com/siteimages/l...ists_32815.jpg At first, I thought Godspeed You! Black Emperor was one of those boring orchestral collectives that try to make boring orchestral uplifting music with the tacky loud violins. I really wanted to avoid this group but they followed me. I had no choice, I had to listen. When I finally heard all 87 minutes of it, I was amazed. I mean, at some times it borders on ambient, at some times it's quite orchestral and at some times, it's eerie. My favorite part of this album was the 14 minute mark in the first part (Storm) where it got all buzzing-beehive drone-like and got REAL frantic. That part (and the album as a whole) moved me, and not many albums can do that. #45: Flying Lotus: Cosmogramma http://kulakmamasi.files.wordpress.c...osmogramma.jpg Jazzy electronic music. Gotta love it. oh, and I also love how he collaborated with that super-cool bassist. it's hard to say anything bad about this album, it's pretty cool, and has one of the most beautiful tracks ever written on it (Galaxy in Janaki), and also features the vocals of Thom Yorke (WTF?). Who saw that one coming? I never really noticed that until I bought the CD that said "FEATURING THOM YORKE". that was a huge Wha? moment for me. that aside, Give this album a try. 'Tis quite interesting. it's like a cross-over between a Broken nintendo game and Raga-esque jazz. |
guhgg, you hate NMH but liked Merriweather? yuck. 'least you got some GY!BE on there
|
Lift Yr. Skinny Fists? Come on, you're killing me!
Nah but seriously, other than that and the first two you posted, I haven't listened to the others at all. They sound pretty interesting, so i have some work to do. |
Lift Yr. Skinny Fists took a while for me to fully appreciate but now it's in my top 10. Brilliant album, and definitely moving as you said.

EDIT: the next entry's gonna be sad.... :C |
Good thread off to a good start. I really like those Animal Collective, Autechre, Maserati, and Flying Lotus albums. Haven't heard of Kona Triangle but it seems like something I would like (even though I find Lone to be not very original, what I've heard of his is pretty run-of-the-mill for the genre). I've listened to that GY!BE album once but haven't gone back for a second listen. Actually I may have only played the first disc. I'm just rarely in the mood for something that slow.
Oh and regarding the Maserati comment, I've never thought of U2 while listening to it. Pink Floyd, yes. There is a lot of PF influence on this album. Keep it up, looking forward to some good suggestions here. |
#44: Sigur Ros: Agaetis Byrjun http://thesteinbergprinciple.files.w...is_byrjun1.jpg What is with these guys and making their music so depressing? like, really? Just the backwards intro gets me down. Jonsi's beautiful falsetto voice isn't helping how depressing this album is, either. oh well, that's a small price to pay for such a great album. I mean, have you ever listened to this album in it's entirety? it's F***ing beautiful! but, I have one question, What's with this band and babies? They have a baby on Von, and I think that's a baby on Agaetis. Babies FTW. Also, you might be asking why this album isn't higher. well, it isn't higher because... (puts flame shield on) I liked Von better. |

and About Maserati, they've been compared several times to an instrumental U2 after a while, they finally just said "we compare ourselves to an instrumental U2". It shuts up the media for a bit. |
Well I will listen with new ears next time. Found out earlier they have a new album out in November, Pyramid of the Sun. No announcement on Temporary Residence's site though, the label the last one was on.

R.I.P the drummer. take the stairs next time. |
#43: !!!: Myth Takes http://cdn.pitchfork.com/media/9956-myth-takes.jpg Let's face it, Nic Offer sucks really bad at singing. But, vocals never really got in the way of the music experience, for me. A lot of people put down this Funk-Punk gem just because of the vocalist, shallow, right? this is a really underrated album. the track Heart of Hearts features trippy, psychedelic guitars and a danceable beat (Almost every track here is danceable, by the way.) that is quite fun. The song All Of My Heroes Are Weirdos is one of my favorite all time songs. If you didn't move at least one part of your body when listening to this than you have serious problem. #42: NEU!: NEU! 2 http://www.progarchives.com/progress...2117102008.jpg Lyrical Genius right here^. Here is an excerpt from Lila Engel: de de dat de dat ohhhh de de dat de dat deeeu de de dat de dat deeeu de de dat de dat oooh de de dat de dat deeeeu oh! HEY! Ad Infinitum. Lyrical jokes aside, this is a really respectable album. Hey, who knew that they had MS paint back in the day? |
you listen to way too much bizarre hipster crap.

thank god. Strawberry Jam fo life.
Also it's cool that Cosmogramma and Skinny Fists were on here. Love both those albums. I used to be really into that Sigur Ros album...but alas, it has grown of me. |

and also, strawberry jam is my favorite AnCo Album :D |

Obviously most people on this thread don't like what I'm saying so I'll butt out. |
Nice work pal, this is looking good. Special props for the Neu! and Autechre albums, those are good 'uns!
That Flying Lotus album is amazing at times, but some of it still hasn't really sunk in yet for me. I expect it will eventually though, his previous album was a similar story... took a good 6 or 7 listens before I loved the whole thing. Anyway, I'm excited to see what comes next here :) |
#41: EITS: The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place http://cdn.pitchfork.com/media/2879-...dead-place.jpg This one's for you Urban. Explosions In The Sky. We all know how much you love post rock and the long band names that follow :p:. That aside, This is a really good album. The opener First Breath After Coma is breathtakingly beautiful (no pun intended) and it's a known fact that Your Hand In Mine is one of the best Post Rock songs ever. oh yeah. #40: Steve Reich: Electric Counterpoint http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61jZjfAA-AL.jpg (i'm only reviewing Electric Counterpoint here, folks) I admit it, I only know of Steve Reich because of The Orb's Little Fluffy Clouds. I'm truly that lame. But, still, sampled by The Orb or not, This is still an awesome piece. The three pieces intertwine so nicely together, and some real musicianship was put into this masterpiece. this is only second to Different Trains, which is up higher on the list. |
@boardsofcanada
I dont really know much of your music so far, but what I do know, I like. Do you mind me asking how old you are? You seem plenty more mature than how old your photo makes you seem :/ |
