I have gone through some Yes stuff which was awesome. I also like Rush if that counts but other than that I don't remember what I have heard.

A friend of mine said Camel & Gentle Giant are good. But I haven't found anything from them just yet.
Yeah I'm adding material from those bands to the comp and many others.

Camel and GG are great and were among the first prog bands I got into.

Yeah I haven't set a date for it because it's been an on and off project due to being sidetracked but I think I'm close to coming up with a solid track list.

Yeah TMV are great. They are certainly one of the most polarizing bands around. Proggies hate them because of their punk influences, scene kids hate them for the opposite reason. I'm surprised they have become as successful as they are.

I admit to not liking their newer stuff as much as their first two albums though, which were excellent

Ya I hear ya. De-Loused was amazing the first time I heard it. It's still my fav TMV album. I find it funny when people hate certain genres and in turn won't listen to bands with those influences. I decide what I like on a band by band basis.

Why are rap and hip-hop two different options?

I don't think there should be a dominate genre, I say break down the walls and radio should return to the free-form style and just play everything.

Isn't this just a "What's your favourite genre?" thread in disguise?

definitely Avant-garde and experimental music. I have love for avant garde and experimental music because the artists within the genre aren't afraid to step out of their musical comfort zones. Experimental electronic genres like IDM (the really fast IDM like Venetian Snares and Aphex Twin) use drum machines not as something to keep time, but as instruments by doing really fast, quirky drum machine snare rolls and sometimes using unusual sounds for percussion (like Aphex Twin's cartoon-y song Logon Rock Witch.)

Experimental rock genres like Post Rock (especially Battles) often use voice as an instrument and have several complicated layers that are interesting to listen to.

I also enjoy it when people like Amon Tobin go out and sample everything they can get their hands on. I watched the documentary accompanying Amon's album Foley Room and i couldn't help but notice that he sampled everything to ants hissing at each other to the rhythmic sounds of factory machines. on that album he collaborated with several musicians and a sound scientist so he could use really sensitive microphones to capture the sounds not possible to catch with an ordinary microphone. (how else do you think he got those samples on the song kitchen sink?)

TL;DR version:
i like experimental stuff.

Would have voted for pop music if there was just a regular "pop" option....pop is versitile. And I actually like a lot of commercialized pop music, from now, from the 60s, from the 80s. Its not that bad. Voted "rock". Pop/hip hop hybrids are the dominant now, I guess and although every song sounds the same, it could be worse. I'd much rather listen to the Top 40 then a modern (not indie) rock station play the same Nickelback and Buckcherry songs over and over again.
Voted rock although I do not care for the most popular modern rock bands. And lol at the two goads that voted for Avant Garde / Experimental.
