I wouldn't go so far as to champion Metallica as good songwriters, but I do think that credit should be given to them for some of their output. I mean really, Taking Dalton Trumbo's novel Johnny Got His Gun and coherently transposing the concept into a metal song at least shows a fair amount of creativity. A lot of Metallica's early material focuses on some pretty relevant and somewhat obscure topics as well.

I'm tired of all the metalheads bitching about Metallica.
"Oh noes they changed their sound." I hate Burton era Metallica fans who bitch about this, I hate Gabriel/Hackett era Genesis fans who bitch about this, I hate DLR era Van Halen fans who bitch about this, I hate Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd fans who bitch about this, I hate Peter Green era Fleetwood Mac fans who bitch about this, I hate Barlow era Dinosaur Jr fans who bitch about this, I hate Slovak era RHCP fans who bitch about this. Well you get the point. |

I'll be the first one to get on the soap box with you when it comes to elitist mother****ers crying "sell out" when a band gets some commercial success, or releases material that is more accessible than what they've built their fan base on. But Metallica...The Black Album...that's a watershed album if their ever was one, and not a good one. |

You know, I never really had a strong opinion of Metallica until I heard about the Napster BS. "BAAAAWWW UR STEALING OUR ART BAAAAAW WE NEED MORE MONEYZ BAWWW WE'RE NOT RICH ENUFF"
That pretty much just turned me off of them forever. I still like a few songs, but I definetely haven't gone out of my way to listen to any of their albums. A local radio station played their newest album in it's entirety the day it came out... and it was ****ing terrible. I wanted to shoot myself, though I'm sure plenty of people thought it was amazing.

Eh, I personally don't mind the Black Album itself. Say what you will as horrific as Load/Reload were, and as much as St.Anger actually somehow managed to be worse, they somehow retained a ridiculous fanbase throughout the years. Not that I have respect for them for it, but I can understand why they don't give a **** about people bitching about them selling out.
Yes, they definitely did, but why bitch about it when they obviously have their millions of dollars and don't give a ****? There's worlds of vastly superior metal bands from the era that faded into obscurity. It's probably more viable that people spend less time bitching about how terrible Metallica, which even their better stuff is overrated, was, and spent the time to pay more attention to metal that didn't sell out, the better off the genre as whole would be. |
