Best iPod Speakers

I purchased a $600 Bose sounddock, and the sound was bass-heavy, distorted, loud, fuzzy, and hard to hear.

My friend hooked up her iPod to a simple old stereo with a headphone jack, and the sound was crisp, clear, and loud.

My question is what kind of dedicated iPod speakers or computer speakers for iMac, either one, can I get that will produce sound that is more clear, crisp, and loud than it is just listening to it on iTunes from my computer or by plugging my iPod into a Bose sounddock.
