bass guitar tune for A Level performance
i need a 12-15 minute long piece of music which is mainly for bass guitar (which is what i will play it on). It is allowed to be a multiple number of pieces, so doesn't have to be one long song. I play at a grade 5-6 standard so not too advanced but fun to play. Ideally needs to have influences from multiple genres of music e.g. funk, blues, jazz, rock, world music etc etc. It's for my A level performance which will help me get a good grade. I've been searching and searching, but cant find anything long enough or good enough or at the standard im looking for. Any suggestions?

Red Hot Chilli Peppers sound like they'd be great fun to play, and would cover the funk/rock part. Not sure on the difficulty - not much of a bassist myself so I don't know, but that would be my input.

what kind of stuff are you already playing? what constitutes grade 5-6 standard?
as for 12 to 15 minute songs, bass heavy, with styles all over the place.... Lark's Tongue in Aspic part 1 - King Crimson Three Days - Jane's Addiction The Return of the Son of Monster Magnet - The Mothers of Invention there's actually quite a bit of Frank Zappa material that would fit the bill. on the other hand, where you say it can be multiple pieces as opposed to just one long song do the pieces all have to be from the same artist? can you just make a collage of coolest bits from various tracks (similar to how a DJ does their thing). either way, i think at least a few of these would be worth consideration. Come On, Come Over - Jaco Pastorius Iambic Poetry 5 - Squarepusher Dirty Trip - Air Theme de Yo-Yo - The Art Ensemble of Chicago Dig a Pony - The Beatles Jaga Jazzist - Airborne If 6 was 9 - Jimi Hendrix If you have to ask - RHCP Orion - Metallica The National Anthem - Radiohead Vicarious - Tool |

thanks guys, these are great suggestions. iv looked into some of them all ready like chilli peppers and jaco pastorius, but tbh im glad u mentioned some others cuz i like playing some of them allready. but im thinking of playing a chilli song. but i want to mix it up a bit and maybe put a jazz piece in too. maybe charles mingus or something similar. Jaco might fit the bill. and no they dont have to be all from the same artist, but i will have to perform the whole song. but what would be perfect is one 12-15 minute song. no vocals. focused on bass. and not having a particular playing style e.g. slapping that dominates throughout. just a bit of everything. for example: slapping, popping, finger tapping, hammer on's, pull off's, pinch harmonics, dive bombs :P, slides. slides would be a preference. basically just a range of techniques. thats why i might use jaco. i am particularly liking les claypool too. tbh i could easily pick 2, 3 or 4 of these songs and i'd be happy to spend the next year to learn them to the best of my ability. so thanks. and just to say: les claypool = wow wow wow

^ the top 2 songs i listed are both over 12 minutes a pop and quite varied in styles and substance. the King Crimson track is all instrumental whereas the Jane's Addiction is just a really long song. for some reason there are only live versions of the KC track on youtube, shouldn't be that hard to find though. i think it has every style you list besides slapping and popping.
if you want a long Jaco piece like that which covers a variety of styles i'd recommend Reza/Giant Steps/Reza (reprise). it's a live piece from his Invitation album though still only about 10 minutes. most of his studio material isn't that long. |
