Stranger still, that's exactly the way Metallica and producer Bob Rock wanted it to sound.

You can't blame them for trying something a little more raw. And btw it was Lars who suggested there were no solos. You saw how quickly that got changed. You've got a band who's ~40 now and they've been jamming together since 18. they are going to try and mix it up. Its really there only bad album objectivly. Unless you're (not you, an objective your) an anal-retentive "old skoool" fan who can't accept change, in which case you probably think there are only 3 good albums.
Fair enough. In my own defense, I did really try to give it a chance. I listened to it multiple times trying to let it grow on me since I was really into Metallica at the time. And believe me, I don't mind change...I fully support a band's decision to explore new sounds. I personally love the Black Album. Hell, I even like a lot of what's on Load and Reload. St. Anger just really doesn't do anything for me. The only reason I haven't listened to Death Magnetic is because I've honestly not been so much into Metallica in the past couple years, so I have no clue how that album played out. I am glad they didn't stick to the St. Anger sound, though.

Rise Against
Siren-Song Of The Counter Culture > Revolutions per minute > Sufferer and the Witness > Appeal to Reason

but i totally love all of them.

But your list is nearly totally backwards.

Modest Mouse
The Lonesome Crowded West > The Moon & Antarctica > This Is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About > Building Nothing Out of Something > Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks > No One's First, and You're Next > Good News for People Who Love Bad News > The Fruit That Ate Itself > Sad Sappy Sucker > We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank

(includes relevant comps and EPs not included on comp or LPs)

I'd love to see your signature/links too, but the huge and obnoxious ones have caused me to block all signatures.

Wow. We Were Dead isn't that bad.

Lonesome Crowded West>Baron Von Bullshit Rides Again>Sad Sappy Sucker>Moon & Antartica>We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank>This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About

That's all I have. All the above are great by the way.

I think I'm gonna attempt a full Elvis Costello one, just because I've got that much else to do...

Elvis Costello
Imperial Bedroom > Spike > The Juliet Letters > Trust > Get Happy > Mighty Like a Rose > King Of America > Blood and Chocolate > The River In Reverse > All This Useless Beauty > My Aim Is True > The Delivery Man > When I Was Cruel > This Year's Model > Secret, Profane and Sugarcane > Almost Blue > Painted From Memory > Brutal Youth > Momofuku > North > Punch the Clock > Goodbye Cruel World

And...

XTC
Black Sea > Mummer > English Settlement > Apple Venus > Skylarking > Drums and Wires > Oranges and Lemons > White Music > Wasp Star > Nonsuch > Go 2 > The Big Express
