Saying that... I have bought greatest hits from a few my favourite Artists (namely Bjork and The Cure :S) purely because it completes my 'hard copy' back catalogue of albums and makes the slightly OCD side of me smile seeing them there, all lined up in order of release... Ahem.

If i'm on the fence about aq band, I usually pick up a best-of. For example, I wasn't sure if I wanted to invest much time into Helmet. I picked up the best-of and I loved it. With Faith No More, I had loved the band for years but their Who Cares Alot? compilation had a whole CD of unreleased stuff.
Sometimes it's a matter of loving a band but it being nice to have all the greats in one place like The Doors, the Beatles, etc. |

With some bands I feel like Greatest Hits and Best Of's are necessary. Some bands released really inconsistent albums and had only certain songs that were good. I know that most of the time GH and BoC's don't manage to list the best songs, but at times they manage to do it.
Some bands were extremely consistent and comps of this type aren't needed for you to get really good material. I guess I'm just neutral on the topic, I would rather have the full lengths, but sometimes the comps are the best/only thing that you can manage.
