The first that comes to mind for me is Built to Spill.

Not strictly my favourite band but lyrically The Flaming Lips are absolutely amazing, there's a depth and mystery to their lyrics that very few bands have.
I accidentally touched my head And noticed that I had been bleeding For how long I didn't know What was this, I thought, that struck me? What kind of weapons have they got? The softest bullet ever shot The Smiths and Joy Division are two obvious bands really worth mentioning. Morrissey with his poetic mixture of despair and humour and Ian Curtis with his painfully honest and gloomy lyrics.

A band I listen to, Sonata Arctica, has really decent lyrics to most of their songs. Also, I really enjoy the lyrics of The Bare Naked Ladies as well. Also, I listen to a christian band called Casting Crowns. They write really compelling and strong lyrics. Really 'make ya think'ers
