Sugar Mountain is one of the best songs Neil Young ever wrote, the lyrics paint really beautiful pictures in your head. As for music in a language you don't understand, have you ever heard the concept of the human voice as another instrument. Take Sigur Ros for example, they write songs in their native Icelandic as well as a language they made up themselves called 'Hopelandish'. Rather than letting the lyrics be the focal point of the music, frontman Jonsi allows his falsetto and vocal melodies to shine though and complement Sigur Ros' epic soundscapes. Besides other languages can be nice to listen to and have certain qualities that the english language doesn't.

As far as other languages, I think not being able to understand what's being sung really detracts from the listening experience. It's like listening to an instrumental with gobbeldy g00k (why is g00k censored???) laced over the top. I can appreciate a good singer even if I can't appreciate the words s/he's speaking, but I still get annoyed when I have to interpret what the songs about based solely on the music. |
