wasn't sure where to put this, jazz? funk? pop? rock? Is there any artists/groups who have a saxophone featured predominently that have the same kind of feel to it as baker street. A lot of saxophone stuff to me just seems really gloomy and slow but the saxophone in baker street always seemed to have so much passion. Enlighten me please.

I don't know, mostly in Jazz unless it's some sort of Jazz fusion. Thanks for the suggestions. Although James Brown is a little to upbeat lol I love james brown, but there's something about the saxophone in baker street that seems so different compared to how it's usually used(or how I think it's usually used).

I'll listen to them (I'm not at work today) and try to figure out the difference. If I can recognize it, I'll see if I can recommend some things.

Edit: Oh jesus was I way off. I thought this was a group. Yeah this is symptomatic of the times. The 70's had the remnants of the psychedelic era, but got far more technical with chops. In my opinion this lead to the bringing in of Jazz - but with the vibe that existed in the 70's.

Its going to be tough to find something quite like this in the contemporary scene because the culture shift has been so huge. If you're looking for something from then I might be able to suggest some things.

Where you'll find more similarities to this "style", a soaring melody that seems to fly above the general ramble of the music, is going to be more trumpet than Sax these days. Calexico does it a lot, though they're using it as support harmonies, and I believe Cake will do it fairly often as well.

The problem with a saxophone, i feel, is the sound it produces. Then the vibe was a little mellow, lets all feel good, the war sucks lets calm down. Today Rock has sort of reestablished its personality, its not willing to throw in flourishes of jazz, reggae, country, and samba - all in one song. Because its gone back to a sort of guttural, raw sound, trumpet would take precedent because it tends to call down the thunder, to turn a phrase, a little better than the sax which is more jazz oriented.
