Default Would you pre-pay for a potential album you wish would be recorded?

I was talking to some buddies the other day when we realized we wished we could give some bands an incentive to record an album we wanted to hear. Imagine if a band could collect all the necessary money to record an album from people who had a specific shared request, like a GZA album produced by Dr. Dre or a Ratatat/Holy **** split (or Sigur Ros and Radiohead or whatever). Having the money beforehand would be like a gamble on behalf of consumers and eliminate the danger of having to pay back an investment. I'd pay $30 or $40+ for a specific album if I could ask for it, and once that money is collected it could pay for the studio time. Then artists would still get the sales from albums pressed after the investors get theirs. What do you think?
