Default Would you pre-pay for a potential album you wish would be recorded?

I was talking to some buddies the other day when we realized we wished we could give some bands an incentive to record an album we wanted to hear. Imagine if a band could collect all the necessary money to record an album from people who had a specific shared request, like a GZA album produced by Dr. Dre or a Ratatat/Holy **** split (or Sigur Ros and Radiohead or whatever). Having the money beforehand would be like a gamble on behalf of consumers and eliminate the danger of having to pay back an investment. I'd pay $30 or $40+ for a specific album if I could ask for it, and once that money is collected it could pay for the studio time. Then artists would still get the sales from albums pressed after the investors get theirs. What do you think?

maudlin of the Well already did this. Well, sort of.

They didn't have the necessary funds to go into the studio and record an album, so they appealed to their fans and with the contributions of around 50 or so people pooled together enough money to finance, record, and distribute the album for free as a courtesy to their fans. Made the #2 spot on last year's RYM best-of list, if I'm not much mistaken.

I could get behind something like that I think...as long as the fans had some say in what was going on. If we all already forked over our money, we should be allowed to vote on the general direction the album takes. How much we actually have a say on, though, is up for debate considering the artistic expression of those involved is still something I want to see. In other words, I wouldn't want us to nitpick every song until all we are left with is a stale and robotic version of something that could be potentially awesome.

this is the only way i'd back up the idea. to support something that's already somewhat done where you can get a rough idea of the final product.

just fronting money for someone to go into a studio and hopefully have something you like come out the other end? that's the whole point of a label.

Depending on same variables like the ones mentioned, yes I would prepay to support certain bands.

I'd love to see your signature/links too, but the huge and obnoxious ones have caused me to block all signatures.

I would!! but not THAT much money, 15 pounds tops... Then again, once I start earning more money, I would be willing to pay a bit more. But only if its a guaranteed money back if they dont actually do it.

Yeah Toby Driver is doing this again to garner funds for Tartar Lamb 2. Tartar Lamb 2 — Kickstarter if any of you are interested, there's rewards too for donating once the project is complete.

I'd get behind it if it's something that I'd really love to hear. I'm not sure about that one that I just posted. Still want to go through my Toby Driver material a bit more and see if I'm enthralled by anything sufficiently.

I agree with what some of the above posters have said......so long as it's mainly in part to the artist/band not having enough funds, and if we have some sort of idea what the idea/concept of the album or songs off of it involve. I would definitely be willing to for some of the bands/artists I really love, especially ones who have not (and may not again ) released anything in a long while.
