Oh, such a great line. That whole album is full of great, raw emotion with lyrics that usually encapsulate it impeccably.

Not my favourite, but I've always liked the familiar impossible longing of:

"In a world of steel-eyed death and men who are fighting to be warm; come in, she said, I'll give you shelter from the storm." - Shelter from the Storm, Bob Dylan.

NumberNineDream 11-01-2009 10:09 PM

When I think of Bob Dylan in terms of lyrics, that's what pops to mind:

Oh god said to Abraham, "Kill me a son"
Abe says, "Man, you must be puttin' me on"
- Highway 61 Revisited, Bob Dylan

It's not what we usually hear.

It's hard for me to think of Bob Dylan in any other terms but lyrics.

Other than possibly how it portrays that Biblical characters were real people with actual feelings, I don't understand your fascination with that lyric. :( Sorry.

When you see how absurd it is that God asked Abraham to kill his a son as some kind of favor, when this guy have been praying to God for more than a 100 years (and I'm not exaggerating here) for a son.

I guess those lyrics express exactly that absurdity. And this lightness in the dialogue, like they're two buddies talking, great!

I do agree with the last thing you said. It's funny in its realism. Bob Dylan's actually my favourite artist. Hmm, according to Last.fm we've similar taste.

far too many to list.

at the moment, i'm more than mildly amused by this line from Beck's track Qué Onda Guero:

Quote:

arriba joto, your popsicle's melting
i'm also digging the following from Tito & the Trantula's track Monsters:

Quote:

sometimes i feel like a freak
i'm the half man turtle, i'm the elephant geek
i'm a man with no hands, i'm a girl with a beak
i'm in my mexican carnival nightmare

When you pass through humble
When you pass through sickly
When you pass through 'I'm better than you all'
When you pass through anger and self-deprecation
and have the strength to acknowledge it all,
When the past makes you laugh
and you can savor the magic
that let you survive your own war,
You find that that fire is passion
and there's a door up ahead, not a wall.

- Lou Reed "Magic and Loss (The Summation)"

Some things I wouldn't miss
But I look at you pants and, I need a kiss.

Why can't I get just one screw?
Why can't I get just one screw?
Believe me,
I'd know what to do.
But something won't let me make love to you.

Why can't I get just one ****?
Why can't I get just one ****?
I guess it's got something to do with luck
But I've waited my whole life for just one

Day after day
I get angry
And I will say
That the day
is in my sight
When I take a bow and say goodnight

60 watts, brighter than my future,
an empty forty, fuller than my life,
there must be more, sometimes i don't think so,
maybe i'm right. maybe there's no such thing as a brighter side
A sultry night stare at moons from rooftops,
A broken engine, poisoned never dry,
I poured my heart out to a god that doesn't listen,
You said you'd save me. You said you'd love me always but you lied.

Janszoon 11-03-2009 09:20 PM

These are currently my favorite lyrics, I find them hysterically funny every time I hear them:

The time has come
All the chosen time to put down your bongs
Take up a knife end all life
Legalize drugs and murder

--Electric Wizard, "The Chosen Few"

TotalHenshin 11-03-2009 09:33 PM

And you run and you run to catch up to the sun, but it's sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older,
Shorter of breath, and one day closer to death
- Time, Pink Floyd

Possibly the best "You're going to die someday" lyrics ever.

Bulldog 11-04-2009 02:32 PM

This town has done us dirty
This town has bled us dry
We've been here for a long time
And we'll be here 'til we die
So we'll finish off the leavings
Of blood and glue and beer
And burn this bloody city down
In the summer of the year

The Pogues - Transmetropolitan

Quite possibly the best drinking song of all time too.

Brand New "Seventy Times 7"

"So is that what you call a getaway?
Tell me what you got away with
Cuz I've seen more spine in jellyfish
I've seen more guts in 11 year old kids
So have another drink and drive yourself home
I hope there's ice on all the roads
And you can think of me when you forget your seatbelt
And again when your head goes through the windshield"

Notveryskilled 11-07-2009 07:31 AM

I really like the lines:

"Feel heavy, Like Floating"
&
"One drink to remember, and Another to forget."

Both from Dave Matthews.

Thats fantastic. I think thats my favourite lyric in this thread yet.

NumberNineDream 11-07-2009 07:00 PM

One line, that it alone gives me the chills:

The summer had inhaled and held its breath too long.
The winter looked the same, as if it had never gone.
- Comin' Back To me, Jefferson Airplane

"The CIA is after me

Hahaha, too bad Alan and Richard are actually serious about music now.

Dieselboy 11-07-2009 11:02 PM

"I'm sick with it, like a hepatitis-B-boy."

Donno if it's my favorite line, but I was listening to some old school hip-hop mix tape last night and heard that... Thought it was pretty clever. ><

Mojo 11-09-2009 11:25 AM

A couple more of mine.

"Poor old man
He had an accident with a three-bar fire
But that's OK
Because he wasn't very happy anyway
Poor woman
Strangled in her very own bed as she read
But that's OK
Because she was old and she would have died anyway
Don't blame
The sweet and tender hooligan, hooligan
Because he'll never, never, never, never, never, never do it again
(not until the next time)"
(Morrissey) (Sweet and Tender Hooligan by The Smiths)

"What really lies, beyond the constraints of my mind?
Could it be the sea, with fate mooning back at me?
No, it's just more lock-jawed pop stars
Thicker than pig ****
Nothing to convey
They're so scared to show intelligence
It might smear their lovely career"
(The World is Full of Crashing Bores by Morrissey)

right-track 11-09-2009 12:51 PM

"Son, I'm 30...I only went with your mother cos' she's dirty".

xxshwangbangxx 11-16-2009 04:31 PM

"And I punch the walls. Do you care at all?
Those days were forever ours.
Your forgotten lies.
They stood the test of time
So I take this opportunity, to tell you
What you don’t mean to me.
You grievances have left me standing still
Under a dark grey sky, we've come undone.
And you've lost it all.
You think you’re so beautiful. Says who?"

HOWL by Florence and the Machine

"If you could only see, the beast you made of me
I held it in but now it seems you set it running free
Screaming in the dark, I howl when we're apart
Drag my teeth across your chest to taste your beating heart
My fingers claw your skin, trying to tear my way in
You are the moon that breaks the night for which I have to howl
Now there's no holding back, I'm making to attack
My blood is singing with your voice, I want to pour it out
The saints can't help me now, the ropes have been unbound
I hunt for you with bloody feet across the hallowed ground
Like some child possessed, the beast howls in my veins
I want to find you, tear out all of your tenderness"

More than one line...but it's got amazing lyrics
