I thought the metaphor was clear. Starting from the saying "to drown one's sorrows", then makes an analogy for saying that worries persist. It's a way to describe insidious feelings, thinkings, moods, a "mental pain", or a depression, an obsession, etc. In the SONG, Judas betrays Jesus and then he can't get the guilty feeling out of his mind. EDIT: I can choose other lines from the same song, if you prefer something more "lyrically noble". For instance: "Waves of regret and waves of joy I reached out for the one I tried to destroy" I like it too.

Ohhh kay now I at least get it, but I still think it could have been said better, but thats my opinion- "My sorrows learned to swim" really seems cheesy to me. I like the waves of regret one better though its more dark, kind of mysterious.

Ah, thought of another great line. This time from Paul Simon's Graceland.
And she said losing love Is like a window in your heart Everybody sees you're blown apart Everybody sees the wind blow

Brand New "Seventy Times 7"
"So is that what you call a getaway? Tell me what you got away with Cuz I've seen more spine in jellyfish I've seen more guts in 11 year old kids So have another drink and drive yourself home I hope there's ice on all the roads And you can think of me when you forget your seatbelt And again when your head goes through the windshield" |

"Mild mannered Superman are held in kryptonite, and the wise and foolish virgins giggle with their bodies glowing bright, through the door a harvest feast is lit by candlelight, it's the bottom of a staircase that spirals out of sight"
I love this line for some reason.... in all the verbose granduer that is the lyrics from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis, this one just paints and vivid and surreal image that I love to play over and over in my head.... doesn't hurt that it's also set to one of the most beautiful melodies on the entire album...

I have always loved this line from Pearl Jam's Black
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star In somebody else's sky, but why, why, why Can't it be, can't it be mine I also love the chorus from Precious Things by Tori amos These precious things Let them bleed Let them wash away These precious things let them break Their hold over me |
